£1000 to spend on a steroe setup.

Been asked by a friend to recommend a CD player, amp, pair of speakers, speaker stands and cables for £1000. I've currently got a Denon 3805 and Arcam DV88+, he just wants a music only system though so i could do with some help.

The only definate i could recommend were either Quad 11L (£300) or Quad L-ite (£150) speakers.

How about buying secondhand?

£600 or so should be enough to buy a secondhand CD player and integrated amp from a respected British manufacturer (entry-level Linn, Naim, etc., or something from Arcam, Cyrus or Quad).
Speaker choice is a bit more difficult (personal taste). The L-ites would work well in a small room, but need help from a sub in a big room if you like lots of bass.
Might be best to get the amp and CD player, then take those to a shop and listen to some speakers.

Second-hand/ex-demo is fine for amps and speakers, but CD players have a bit more to go wrong, and care should be taken. However, in all cases, old models being sold off cheaply would also be a good bet. There's likley to be very little difference between old and new models of amps and speakers, and CD players for that matter.

Get them from a dealer, and you'll probqbly get a few months warranty as well - and either save a lot of money, or get a better system for your £1,000.

I would suggest a hard look at the Rotel RA 06 series as discussed here.
This should be a decent sounding combination and should take some of the guess work out of your choices. The RA06 and perhaps the RA05 amp should leave enough for decent speakers. Finish off with interconnects from the special buys here and Van Damme proffesional speaker cable from Maplins and you should be able to scrape in on budget.
