Musical Fidelity pre/power set up.

Hi,

I have just bought a Musical Fidelity A308 pre/power amp and Musical Fidelity 3D CD. I got it purely for music and quite honestly the sound is superb. I have two minor negatives however. There is no specific sub output though there is a loop out. Problem with the loop out is that it sends all the signal to the sub and I'm not a fan of LFE + main. At present I'm using the tape output to my AVR 3806 and running my 2 subs from there but this is a lot of hassle as there is too much toing and froing with volume controls. The second problem is that these amps naturally send the whole signal to the speakers. This actually sounds pretty good through my Dynaudio Facettes for some types of music but one of the drivers rattles a bit (need a service probably) with bassy stuff. I've got used to setting my speakers to small through the 3806 and making full use of my subs. I could use pre out and feed all signals through the 3806 and use speaker set up there but don't fancy that. Anyone got any ideas how I can achieve LFE to subs with a roll off about 60hz without going through the 3806? Would some kind of graphic equaliser do it?

Cheers, Bob.

Bob,
I too have the 308 pre/power combo but your question is a bit confusing...

You say the pre/power is for music only so where does LFE come into it?

bob, not sure, but this might work, will be the only way i see it happening anyhow...

source in to 3806, cut the music at 60hz or wherever you want it, use the 3806 pre-outs to the MF pre amp's inputs.........this still leaves the 3806 with master volume control tho...and in the chain.....

dunno if there are any commercially available equipment that you can use in the system without involving the 3806.......probably be some more specialist studio equipment tho....but i dont know what or where you could buy it...

Of course you're right I used the term LFE but really I should have said bass re-direction I have two PB12 subs which I like to handle the lower frequencies below about 80 hz. My main speakers are generally excellent but the lower frequencies cause small vibrations in a couple of the drivers and I have used the bass management of the 3806 to smooth them out. I guess it would be better to get the drivers looked at but still I'd like similar control of my music to that which I have with movies (so I can mess that up as well )

Knyght Byte, I could use the 3806 in various ways but would really like to keep it out of the chain if I could. I really bought the MF gear because I wanted to go a bit purer with my music so maybe I should just use loop out, send the full signal to the subs and stop messing about

Right Bob,with you now

I use large floorstanders so I have no real need for a sub (or two ) for music but I do use a sub for the LFE output of my Yammie processor.
It's more for crash, bang + wallop in action films but sometimes I do loop a full range signal from the 308 power amp and use the crossover on the sub.....lots of fun but not exactly 'pure' as you put it

I would seriously have your main speakers looked at - they really shouldn't be rattling - what are they btw?

I've got Dynaudio Facettes -large floor standers - as my main speakers. I've just tightened up a couple of the drivers and hey presto no more rattle They really are superb (should be for the money) and now they're settling in to the 308 it's all starting to make sense actually

I don't need the subs but I do like my bass so I will carry on the feeding it into my AVR and juggling remotes

Cheers all
