Help! only 1 speaker working...

Hello good people - first post on here.

I have a Marantz PM 6010SE amp, a Project deck, a NAD C542 CD player and some Kef Cresta speakers; the cabling is QED Silver Special 25th Anniversary. The system has worked fine in the past but now I'm only getting sound out of one channel. This applies both from CD player source and from record deck. Swapping over the cables ie from the back of one speaker to the other produces sound from the 'old' channel - I can either have my left speaker working or my right but not both. Any suggestions on how I can proceed with a diagnosis, or what it might be? With apologies if it's really obvious!

Have you checked the speaker cable connections on the back of the amp?

Thanks - I have and the problem persists. Do amps have fuses in them that can blow? I guess I'll just have to take the amp and cables somewhere to have them look at it

Swap the cables at the amp end - that'll show whether it's the amp or the cable.

Some amps have fuses inside, but they may be small ones, soldered in place. There may be 2 fuses for the power supply - some amps have a separate supply for each channel.

If your amp has an A/B speaker switch, or a headphone socket, this could be causing the problem. Try moving the switch a few times, or inserting a headphone plug. In fact, if you can connect some headphones, that will show you if the fault lies in the pre-amp (headphones will only work one side) or the power amp.

sounds very much like youve blown a fuse. Most amplifiers have fuses to protect the output transistors. These are easy enough to replace and a hifi shop will be able to do it for you in about 2 minutes.
I had this go wrong with a sugden i used to have. only problem was after it went the first time it kept blowing. So maybe itll be worth your while to get the amp checked over as the blown fuse may indicate that something is wrong internally.

Sugden Fuses.

My sugden has two fuses for each channel, I have blown them all on more than one occasion. The first time was a big panic! With me it is when I am using a reel to reel tape recorder with microphones feeding back. I thought I had blown the speakers the first time, the amp is only on a quarter volume. I think my amp needs 1.2 amp x4. They are a different size to a normal 13 amp house fuse. Different fuses affect the way my amp sounds.
