Yamaha CDR-HD1000 or Sony HAR-D1000?
Ok, both of these are HDD recoders, and both can be had for about £500.
Question is which one, each has its pro's and con's, just wondering if anybody owns either of the two.
Yamaha
pro's: - can replace hdd with bigger size, co-ax/optical in and out, no compression
cons:- only 20gb hdd to start with, availability of the item
Sony
pro's:- 40gb hdd as standard, USB PC interface
cons:- ATRAC compression, only analogue output
i like the idea of a PC interface, but i also want to use an external DAC, so any help would be appreciated.

I wouldn't buy anything that didn't support mp3PRO. Don't know if either of those do or not. -? Not very likely on the Sony.

compression format doesn't bother me, as i plan use NO compression.....MP3's are only useful for portable devices, and are no good for hi-fi use..

I notice you use the B&W CDM speakers – what are they like? Especially the centre.

the centre is nice, a great improvement on the Mordant Short i had before it.
The only problem is, its a bit TOO GOOD....it shows up dvd's with a less than perfect soundtrack, espically speech (obviously). But dialogue is very crisp, and clean.....plus goes quite low, as i don't a sub, i have the front 3 set to large.

I can handle that. I really don't mind when my kit is good enough to show flaws in the programming material. You've made my mind up, although I think that the CDM speakers are probably due for a "freshening up" by B&W, a bit like how the 600 series has been recently.

I'm thought I had reviews that go back further than that – but your right. I can't find any past about a year old.
