Please help! Advise on buying cd decks required

Hi! I really hope you can help. Im looking to buy some cd decks for my boyfriend for christmas, but have no idea what im looking for. He used to dj at parties and in clubs with turntables (i bought him some technics a few years ago). But since we had our daughter he's got out of practice. He says he'd love to return to djing, but the technics need new needles and the vinyl collection is well out dated. I think he's better off getting cd decks than spending money updating the technics, and he seems keen for cd decks too. However,i obviously want to surprise him, but there is such a huge range on the market i dont know what im looking for. I dont want to spend a huge amount, as he will be fairly new to cd decks, only having used friends a couple of times (but very experienced with turntables so he has the skill), and due to comitments he may or may not pursue the djing further. So i basically want to try and pick up an ebay bargain or something like that. It doesnt have to be top of the range, but does have to have the right features to be useable should he want to begin to take it further, and for him to have fun with. I know some of these cd decks just have 2 slots to play one cd after another-this is not what i want! I have seen the ones where there is a dial on top and you get hands on mixing and scratching the cds using these dials as if they are turntables. What are these types of decks called, and what would be a good brand to look for? Any ideas on price? When im browsing, what specifications are important to look for? I would really appreciate your help!! Thanks, louise x

have you considered going down the digital route instead? a lot of DJ's now use computers and either USB or firewire hardware to mix the tracks, these could include the wheels and cross faders and also assignable pads for things to be assigned to. there are also decks available that you can dock ipods on and use all the songs off of them, might be worth thinkiong about if he has an ipod already.

heres different price ranges just at a quick look on ebay.

M-Audio Torq Xponent Advanced Digital DJ System on eBay (end time 27-Nov-09 11:32:57 GMT)

BEHRINGER BCD 2000 DIGITAL DJ MIXER & CONTROLLER on eBay (end time 02-Dec-09 14:43:53 GMT)

Wow!! Legs 11 and you buy him decks too? You're a keeper love, I hope he realises how lucky he is.

Question: does he still have his old equipment ie. mixer, etc? If yes, then you'll be best off getting a couple of standalone CD decks.

Now, if he's experienced at mixing he'll soon tire of some cheap decks, so the only real answer is Pioneer:

Pioneer DJ Equipment DVD / CD Decks

The best are the CDJ-1000 models, but he'll be just fine with an entry-level model such as the 100S. 400 and 800 models are midrange and nice too. Check EBay, there are tons of options available. Good luck.

Although it would be very remiss of me not to suggest you buy him a couple of new carts for his 1210s instead and get him spinning again the way choons should be done.

The only thing is he's not very technically minded and not a whizz on the computer. But is excellent with all the dials etc on the old decks and mixer! Do you think he'll be able to pick up how to use these things easy enough where you have to download stuff? We dont have a laptop either, although have been thinking of getting one (and could afford to get one if i got decks as cheap as the behringer ones). I am getting an ipod for our daughter for christmas, so could be very handy to plug that in and use tunes from there. All sounds very complicated to me though! Do these things come with instructions?

The behringer one suggested above is amazingly cheap! Would it have verything he'd need to get going, and would it be good enough? Its an excellent price. Can you put cds into both of the above options and mix them together, and scratch using those pad things? - just incase he cant get the hang of the digital stuff and just wanted to mix cds like with vinyls? Also, do the above options have everything needed just to plug in and go,or would i need to purchase other stuff too. Sorry to be such a dumb ass, only when i read the details on the descriptions of these decks it really means nothing to me,and i cant figure out whats good and whats not! I really appreciate you guys taking the time to advise me xxx

I would have loved to get him some pioneer 1000s, this is what i started out looking for, but just a little out of my price rabge!! beyond pioneers im very confused! The 100s are definately affordable, but will they be good enough? Thet look quite easy to use too. We do still have the technics, and mixer which is Gemini pmx 140, would this be compatible with pioneers? Its just not worth replacing needles and carts on the technix because his vinyl collection is so out of date, he'd need to spend so much money on this too, so he might as well just start with cds/mp3 as this seems to be the future. Will the 100s use mp3? Thanks for all your helpfulness!!!
