Rega P5! what are the alternatives?

I've been steadily building my system over the last year for both home cinema and music but have found myself getting more into the music side of things and have decided that I need a good turntable so that I can start listening to all my old vinyl again.

I have a budget of around £1000 and seem to have settled on the Rega P5 with the TT PSU upgrade and the Rega Exact cartridge, has anyone got this setup? is it as good as the reviews say? should I look elsewhere within my budget? should I pair the Rega P5 with a different cartridge?

Sorry for all the questions, but I've just started looking into this and there are definately a lot of different options.

Re: Rega P5! what are the alternatives?

You might want to consider the funk firm vector; michell gyrodec or avid diva II which come in below the £1K but you need a tonearm + cart. Alternatively, you might want to consider the second hand market where you can easily pick-up a bargain, eg, a gyro with cart and arm for less than your £1K. Typically, these turntables are very well looked after whether you buy from a dealer or an individual. Personally, I would buy the best TT that I could and not worry too much about the arm and cart (so relatively cheap ones to start are OK) because I would upgrade them over the years. Again, you can get great bargains on used arms which will be sound, although I'd always buy cartridges new, personally.

Good luck

Andy
