System for me Dad - help please

Dad is after a good quailty sounding system.
Needs to be the following

Not too big
Look rather nice
Have not too big speakers
Stereo rather than surround sound
Have CD Player, Tuner, Tape deck etc
Have (or be able to have connected to it) a record player
Be no more than about £450

To give you an idea he has seen a picture of the smaller Denon units and likes the look of those

Could someone reccomend a few units and where best to buy them from

Duncan this little system looks like a real bargain (it covers CD/Tuner/Cassette), it also adds the bnous of Sony MD functionality which can be used with a USB port on a PC, all that’s required is a £40 NAD phonostage/Project phono stage for TT duties I reckon, you could change the speakers if you wish anyway here is a quote from another thread :

Anyway dudes Im finding it very hard not to buy one of these things and bolting it into my PC for another system, one of the best VFM mini systems I have seen in a long time, For those into MP3 and the like one of these off a PC with its NetMD functions is a no-brainer. CD+MD+Cassette+Tuner, Amp + Speakers for £220. Sony is really pushing its MD technology for Net / MP3 usage as well.

Similarly the Denon DM31 is a stonking little mini/micro system, but you will need a sep cassette deck + Phono stage.

Amazon for the Sony, Empiredirect/Unbeatable for the Denon.

Thanks - only problem is - whats the system

Also whats the phono stage thing ?

Dad has a rather servicable record deck at present which connects to his existing (but now broken) hi-fi via a phono cable

Your Dads TT will require a "phono stage" before its fed into a micro system like this, other option is to get an amp with a phono stage onboard, for £450 and all your requirements I think this is out of your price range.

Do a search on NAD+Phonostage on Google for more info.

Thanks - one thing I should have said is that he is not keen on really tiny units like that (although still does not want anything HUGE) and also fancies either a modular unit (like the Denon) or even a seperates system
