Dac

Hello,

I read the sticky thread about DAC's above with great interest bit just wished to clarify a few points.

I have just purchased a sony dav-s550 system and will be using it for CD playback. Would it be worth me purchasing a DAC to improve cd playback? And if so are the speakers connected to the DAC or can I leave them connected to the sony system?

I'm sorry if it's a really stupid question

James

Mobily I think that the hindering part of a AV 5.1 one box system like the 550 is the 5.1 pre-amp in the amplification section this will stifle the units stereo playback options no matter what you feed it, I also think routing an offboard DAC via its digital output to route back into the 550s analogue inputs is not much use, much better to feed a DAC from the 550 then into a stereo amp.

You cant route a DAC towards speakers without amplifcation, you can do that towards active speakers (with their own amps) or towards an amp, then onwards towards speakers, amplification is required at all times in addition to the speakers.
