Any Celiacs out there?

I have been a Celiac on a gluten free diet for about 8 years now.

Thought I would start this thread as I would be interested in tips and recommendations on peoples experiences with buying food, restaurants, takeaways and life in general?

Beer is always a problems for Celiacs but I quite like Estrella Damm Daura. Its a nice lager thats not expensive unlike most gluten free beers

Any comments / tips welcome

Very few it seems, a forum search on celiac brings up a few threads, but no sufferers and a search on coeliac brings up 2 people who have it, but I don't think we've seen either of them posting in here.

Not coeliac myself but our son has type 1 diabetes and many of the other families we know are afflicted with the coeliac disease as well as the diabetes. All of them state how difficult it is to manage.

Plus me but I can't really help because I don't live in UK and never even visited there :D Almost all special diet groceries that I use are made in my country, and I think that theyre not exported abroad.. And the beer is a problem at here in Scandinavia also :D

I have had it for about seven years now and am used to it. But it does get a bit boring and repetitive! Its most difficult when I am out and about or on holiday as not everyone really understands it and you dont want to end up ill on holiday

This is a good beer and not over priced like most gluten free products:- Daura, suitable for coeliacs ★ Summer Spot 2012 · Estrella Damm beer · Barcelona 1876

Budweiser is supposed to be gluten free, but I have read conflicting reports on it. I am OK with one or two but no more than that! Fortunately the UK is a good place for cider with lots of different brands.

What do you drink?

Same here, at home things are quite good nowadays, but of course the amount of choices is limited compared to normal people But at holidays I usually have really hard times, I like to travel but now for the last 6 years it has been little complicated because in some countries they are never even heard about condition called coeliac disease, like in Thailand. I could only it safely in some Swedish steakhouse, where was swedish chef preparing the food just for me

What comes to drinking (and eating also), my diet has to be naturally gluten free, so there is only few choices available. One is called Mongozo, which is made from quinoa (not all mongozos are suitable) and the other one I cant remember now. I usually drink cider, and I must say that all the best ciders come from UK, all the Finnish ones are rubbish

I didnt have much trouble is Thailand as they dont usually thicken sauces and a lot of soups are coconut based.

Spain is quite good. I was there last year and most people understand "Sin Gluten" and even the ice cream parlour had a gluten free listing on their ice cream menu Lots of things are labelled gluten free.

Another drink I picked up in spain is "Tinto De Verano". Its basically poorish quality red wine mixed with fanta lemon. Its mixed and then kept in the fridge in a plastic container. Its tastes great and its good as a cooling long drink on a hot day - not many of those in the UK at the moment!

Ever since I started the gluten free diet I have never put and weight on and wondered if it was due to the diet! How about you?

Thanks for the advice, I have been looking for a place to go which would be easy with my diet and I have read that Spain would be good. I have never put up any weight as I have played football for my whole life and also other sports as hobby :D I think I got few pounds when the coeliac disease was diagnosed, because the food started to infiltrated (I´m not sure it this is the right word) better..

Yes I wondered if it is the diet or the fact that I play football that keeps the weight down. The only thing is at 52 my hour of five aside on an Monday is starting to get harder and the recovery times for knocks takes longer! Hopefully I will have a few years left of playing as I really look forward to it!

I am off to Spain on Friday for a week so if I find any useful celiac info I will post back.

Hi cunny and Sammy, I have coeliac (celiac) disease also, just diagnosed 2 weeks ago.

I've joined CSI (the Coeliac Society of Ireland), got their handbook and Gluten free Food List so I've tried to follow that rigidly.
Already I feel I have lost some of the bloated feeling, IBS type symptoms and a few pounds on the scales.
I have already found "Estrella Damm Daura" in my local Tesco nice stuff, and I'll have to get used to cider again.

Still getting my head around it, overall I'm glad to get diagnosed, could be worse I suppose.

Its never nice to be diagnosed with an illness, but identifying food as a coeliac has been getting easier over the past few years. Also as the article below, more and more business are starting to realise they can make money out of it - which is great for us

Post on the thread if you need any help with anything!
