It's true that you can get to very low body fat without doing any cardio at all. Doing weights burns a fair old amount of calories, coupled with a good diet, you'll look good.

But for me, health and fitness is about more than looking good. Doing cardio and having good cardiovascular fitness has more benefits than just fat burning. It is good for mental well being, it makes your body process food efficiently, you can do things physically that most people cant. It's awesome.

Plus, you get quite a lot of attention from women when you're out running, which is always nice

You might be able to pick up your kids without doing any cardio, but wait till they are running around the garden!

I spent MANY hours walking on gradients on treadmill's when I started. TBH its all I could manage.

For those who can't get to the gym or don't have weights then cardio is essential like mr.nwgarrett somewhere up above :D, he's lost a huge amount of weight with a healthy diet and walking for miles :D

Aaaaw I was looking forward to some fang-dangle new theory on why cardio should not be done, lol!
Tbh I was a bit skeptical, I have seen brilliant results with running so far and I actually really enjoy it. I am aware weight loss is mostly diet, however, I have had gains in other areas as well, that diet certainly wasn't the reason for.
I am also aware that resistance/ weight training is very important- I am going to include more of this down the line, but cardio IMO is a must as well.

Ditto same here. If I was not doing cardio, my weight loss would not be as much. It has already reduced quite a bit as it has been over a year.

but when you've lost all the weight and you still be unfit with regards to your cardiovascular system, so you have a healthy heart etc, like I said previously for those who don't do weights then you say don't do cardio then they aren't getting any exercise :S

No one on this forum is going to disagree that creating a calorie deficit is going to lose you weight. Only doing cardio is likely to lose you lean body mass in the long term so, unless you have a medical issue like nwgarratt, resistance training should be a part of your weekly routine.
Apart from the health benefits of doing cardio there is also the added bonus that you can eat more and still remain at a decent deficit IF you also do cardio at the same time.

There also the fact that a lot of cardio can be enjoyable. Personally, running on a trainer/cycle in a gym bores me rigid but I love cycling outdoors - seeing and discovering the local countryside and playing competitive racquet sports. I also like to mix up my cardio by doing resistance training with light weights i.e complexes. Killer cardio workout

Given a choice of weight loss via less food, no cardio and weights OR lots of food, cardio and weights I'll take the second option every day

This is what I have started to do something similar to this recently. I started doing Kettleworx, it is kettlebell training- the maximum weight is 20lb, however it is cardio at the same time. It is absolutely brilliant and my god do I feel it the next day always!

I don't deny I could lose weight just from weights and diet. As I said, I'd have to eat a lot less than I do now. I enjoy cardio (mainly the competitive stuff), its good for me and I enjoy eating. if I do the cardio I can eat more of what I enjoy - and I have more energy to run around the garden with my kids. Cardio-vascular health is important to me

And its not necessarily what you are saying, its the way you are putting your point across. If you put peoples backs up they arent going to listen to you. Put your point across intelligently and non belligerently and people will listen to you

And I can show you a few sites, run by well known, published fitness/bodybuilding gurus who argue just as much the other way that a mix of cardio and weights is the way to to. Tom Venuto for instance

What has your age got to do with knowing more on the subject other than making you cocksure, insolent, arrogant and raging with testosterone driven anger?

"I will call her an idiot "
"probably poorly educated with a bad btec from college"
"she doesn't have a bloody clue."

Oh and you had a good laugh about her with your mates down the gym.

Will that do for starters?

This is a forum, of course people question others opinions and after the arrogant way you stormed on the forum rubbing everyone's backs up last night, "silly" was quite mild. That is not an invitation to insult the person questioning your opinion.

So far you've given a lot of billy big ******** and no real information. Why don't you give everyone here some proper solid advice? I've not seen any yet apart from people don't need to do cardio.

Desmo, he is 19 and has been training for 3 years (as he said earlier) therefore what he says is gospel and has no need to explain. In fact, I was reading the bible the other day and they even referred to him as a point of reference.

Thread is going off topic though now, to the original question. It is about balance. I lost many stones with cardio and a decent diet. Basically, stop eating crap and drinking beer really.

I do wish you all the best, its a long hard road, but worth it.

Thanks everyone for the help and advise, it's much appreciated.

What do people think of this snippet of a documentary that was on a few years ago? It kind of goes along with what I said in my first post about a set point- its very discouraging to watch if you have lost a lot of weight!

The choice will always be yours. Just be more active to counter eating more.

That Dr seems to think differently! I never went in search of that by the way.
