Or have what you enjoy in moderation. A little syrup is fine.

A little of anything is fine. Eat what you need. Makes your diet sustainable.

I'm all for a bit of what you fancy, as long as you are strict enough with yourself to keep it within
Limits

One thing that's easy to do is intelligent substitutions so you don't really notice them. Jacket spud for chips, more fibrous veg instead of starches, low fat substitutes, turkey or chicken instead of beef/lamb etc etc
If your taste buds will happily accept sweetener instead of sugar then great. You might save 100 cals a day. All the little changes can add up over weeks and months. If you need to get stricter after that then you have a choice. Do what works for you and with something you can live with.
If it doesn't work try something else

What's the point in a chcolate oatcake? You might as well just eat some chocolate and save yourself the oatcake calories.

Imo the word diet should be banished . A healthy balanced controlled eating pattern is what's needed. Adjusted to your energy requirements. If its working and its sustainable then you got it right.

"diet" is over used and its meaning diluted by con men/women and the media.

You're really starting to get on my nerves. Are you serious?

I don't normally get wound up by posts on internet forums, but in this thread we have a man with a family who has taken a massive step in looking to change his life. Everyone is doing their best to provide support based upon proven advice - which we ourselves have used to lose lots of weight (Me 4+ Stone, NWGarett 10+ stone etc etc) and you've come and posted a load of drivel on the thread - advising that porridge with golden syrup is healthy

Oh!? Me too 4 stone. And no diet and with syrup. And been steady since i got to my weight. You annoy me too actually but i held back.

Carb watching beats calorie counting. Proven.

There is nothing wrong with the word diet, its how its used thats the problem.
If someone says 'diet' people automatically think that they are trying to lose weight.
A diet is what ever it is you are eating. Chocolate and full saturated items are all part of a diet (albeit not the healthiest).
You can have a weight gaining diet as much as a weight loss diet.

Back on the subject of porridge and golden syrup. I am sure that a good Maple syrup is better for you and also tastes far better (or did i dream it?).

Anything with anything is healthy in moderation. Why can't you see that?

If you take a look at the main workout thread you will see that's pretty much what we are working with. Create a calorie deficit with a decent split of carbs, fats and protein. Eat lean protein, good carbs and fats. Cut out the saturated fat and processed food. Couple the above with cardio and weights workouts.

Nothing faddy, populist or that restrictive. Just sensible dietary and exercise planning.
There is a lot of rubbish out there I agree but that's not what we are about on this forum. Eat lots of the right food and burn off more than you eat. It's not rocket science

And yes throw on the odd thing you fancy cos it helps you cope. Too restrictive is too hard to stick too unless you are seriously motivated

Can't agree with this though. What happens if I watch carbs but binge on fat, at 9 cals a gram ? If I was overrating protein and fat I'd still put on weight. If I'm watching intake on all 3 then im counting calories to some extent, even if it's a rough guess

Surely watching carbs is just another way of restricting overall calorie intake ?
Common sence is a must. A little education too.

Agree with the fat binging but as above that's not hard to educate on.

Iv not read the other thread, i might do.

Protein intake is solved with the walks or other light exercise.

Meat is my friend. Full of the stuff.

What i think im trying to say is i did it this way, i had previously tried other calorie restriction diets and all id did was make me ill . This worked with me, my wife. A friend has lost 5 stone, me 4 and ditto the wife.

I never felt restricted food wise or even hungry at all.

If this annoys people then so be it.

My bp is bang on now, as are my other main stats.

Good luck to the op. Stick it out. Youl be throwing bags full of clothes out soon!!

I think a read of the other thread (and previous originals) will show you where we are coming from, which isn't far from your viewpoint tbh
The gist is a small deficit and slow and steady weight loss to keep it off and ensure you don't go hungry. Crash dieting just doesn't work and I assume your calorie based diets had far too few calories in.
Certain foods you can eat slmost as much as you like, others you need to be careful with. I think we are on the same page here pretty much

We are talking a lowish carb, high protein, decent fats diet. Which sounds much like yours. Choices within that diet then come down to how strict you want to be and how much you want to lose. That's when you can swap out simple sugars for complex ones for instance

Lord, give me strength...

I'm curious as to where you got that fire analogy from? The last time I heard it, it was being used by a personal trainer at the gym trying to convince me that my metabolic rate was a fire that had to be continuously stoked up to keep it running at an optimum level.

Great job on your own weight loss by the way. Do you mind me asking what weight you were before the loss?

How do you define too much and too little if you don't count calories?
