faulty headphone jack socket or wrong connector for stereo?

Hi,

I am trying to connect standard headphones to my digital piano but can't get them working properly.

The socket on the piano is 1/4" type, so I am using a standard stereo (I think?) jack adaptor that converts my 3.5mm jack on my headphones to the 1/4" socket. I even bought a new adaptor as I thought it was faulty.

When plugged in the sound comes from the right headphone only. However, if I slightly withdraw the jack from the socket then the sound comes from the left headphone only. My piano has two identical headphone outs, but both give exactly the same problem.

Any idea what could be causing this problem?

I wondered whether my piano output may be mono, so I need a different kind of adaptor? However I have checked the manual for it, and it clearly states the output is stereo.

Is this a fault with my digital piano - if so any idea how I might fix it, as I imagine getting a Yamaha dealer to do it may be costly.

I'd really appreciate any thoughts on this - Thank you !

Re: faulty headphone jack socket or wrong connector for stereo?

PS I've also tried two sets of headphones, so I know it isn't the headphones that are faulty.

Thanks
