Damaged DT880s, how to fix?

I bought a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 880s a few months ago and had no problems with them until just recently. I believe the connection between the cord and the cans is damaged. They often work fine, but occasionally if the cord is moved, pulled out or pushed into the socket in the left headphone, the sound will change. Often it will begin playing in only one side or very quiet or drowned out. I will have to push the cord in or pull it out slightly in order to hit the sweet spot where it will play normally. Does anybody have any ideas on how I should go about fixing the cord/connection? I await your replies and thanks in advance.

Are you certain it is necessary to completely recable the headphones? Is it possible that I could simply open the headphones and fix the connection?

Re: Damaged DT880s, how to fix?

I went ahead and opened them up. The cord seemed to be pushed in pretty far which twisted the wires making the connection. I pulled it back down and straightened it and closed them back up. I now hear normal sound and tried fussing with the wire a bit and no change occurred. However I fear this may only be a short term solution.
