5.1 Headphones that take Digital Optical Input?

Please can you help, I have a PS3 and 360 and frankly I like to play games and movies into the wee hours but live in a block of flats so could really really use a pair of 5.1 headphones to use. Only input method I have is the Optical Cable(s) that run out of my games consoles. I can of course set the consoles to stereo and output the sound through my TV and therefore plug headphones into that but I would really like a 5.1 set that I can connect direct to my 360/PS3. Can you help? Cheers.

Re: 5.1 Headphones that take Digital Optical Input?

I've got a pair of Sharkoon Xtatic earphones that give a pretty good 5.1 sound (i use these on my 360), only issue I have is that you can't hear people talking that well with them. This is because you need to push the voice though the main channel (you have to set this up in your preferences to play from loudspeaker). Bit of an issue if you play with friends a lot.

These do take an optical input into their little converter box thing, I know as that is how I have them set up. They even come with an optical cable for that purpose. I got mine at a reasonable price from scan.co.uk.

Other options are (trying to remember the names):
  • The Tritton Xtreme 360 which look exactly the same but seem to be more expensive, not certain about optical but would assume so. I have an incling that these are exactly the same as the Sharkoons but rebranded as Tritton.
  • There are also some wireless Earforce X4's but no idea what these are like or if they take optical.

Re: 5.1 Headphones that take Digital Optical Input?

Just had a look on Scan.co.uk and these seem to have jumped up in price since I bought mine at £62 with delivery. They are now £105, but look a bit different, I think I've got the V2's and they are now selling V3s.

The Wireless Earforce X4s seem to be around £130 on Amazon.

Re: 5.1 Headphones that take Digital Optical Input?

Thanks a lot, at least I know now it is possible to do this. I found a pair for £75, not sure if they are V.2 or V3? Hmm think they are V.2 but the website doesn't say if they are available. Anyway thanks for your help I will keep looking. I am not worried about speech as I don't play a lot online.

Ah I found the V.3's on Scan.co.uk, in stock, but £105 hmmmmm don't know. Seeing as I can use my optical outputs from my PS3 and 360 with them they seem like the easiest choice for me, will have to ponder it a while.

Are there any other options for the PS3? (with a usable mic for the PS3)

Those aren't surround sound though and are not optical.

Re: 5.1 Headphones that take Digital Optical Input?

RadicalFish,

Both the Tritton & Sharkoons take an optical in and state that they can be used with a PS3:

TRITTON Technologies, Inc. - TRIGA600 AX360
SHARKOON Technologies GmbH

If you look at the latest sharkoon's they also state a specific USB connection to use with the PS3.

Re: 5.1 Headphones that take Digital Optical Input?

I currently have my optical out from the PS3 -> Home theater system. Do you know if these can be setup so both the headphones and the Home theater can 'share' the optical out?

Re: 5.1 Headphones that take Digital Optical Input?

i have a set of dolby digital headphones - pioneer drs3000c, and the sound is very good. ive got them hooked up to my xbox, ps3, pc and tv

they are available via import only but im not 100% sure i would recommend them to everyone as they can be prone to interference

a cheaper alternative is the little surround sound jvc unit, which a lot of people here recommend (i forgot the name of it though)
