Thanks: Gave 5, Got 3 | Yet Another Headphone Reccomendation
Looking to replace a set of Sony MDREX32s. My main gripes with them are that there is too much bass, the treble seems to be very harsh and there's lots of sibilance(I think that's the term for harsh "ss" sounds etc?).
I have a budget of upto £80 but could stretch to 100 if the mood takes me.
If they could be small enough so that I can lie on a pillow on the side of my head that would be fantastic(I have a hard time judging the size of headphones online and I don't know of anywhere nearby where I can test sets lol)
One last thing, headphones that allow the cable to be routed up and over the back of the ear would be desireable.
I have so far looked at the Etymotic ER6I but reviews suggest a lack of bass whereas I am looking for a more balanced sound.
Any suggestions very welcome. |

That sounds odd the etymotic er6i have a higher bass responce than normal infact about 8-9dBs more, the etymotic er6 (without the 'i') have a lack of bass but only -1dB or so.

Ah, sorry didn't realise there were two different versions. Does anyone know how big the ER6Is are and how well they stay in ya lug holes? Or... what about their hf5 'phones?

The triple flange ear pieces are suppose be good, most people seem to prefer them. Btw the etymotic ER-4P are a better set of earphones, used to be really pricey not so sure what they cost now but worth a look.

They look to be about £140-150, unfortunately a bit out of my price range. |

The Sennheiser CX95's are a quality set, they're well under your budget, around £40/50 but for under 100 quid you cant do much better in my view. I tried the Phillips 9850 which were £70 and absolutely shocking & Shure SE110's which didnt have anywhere near the bass response i was looking for, i listen to mostly hip-hop and soul so bass is a big part but has to be balanced and the Senn's give me exactly the sound im looking for. If your wanting to spend your whole budget then fair enough, just my 2 cents if you haven't tried them before have a listen you might be suprised.

Hmm they do look interesting and as you say, well under budget too which is always a point in favour . Due to the shape etc how well do they hold in your ears and how are "ss" and "ch" sounds handled; are they overly harsh? I only ask as I am using an iPod nano which doesnt have a proper EQ .

I use them with a iPod 4th Gen and have the EQ on "dance" if that means anything. I don't find myself cringing at high pitched sounds, they handle pretty much anything i throw at them well, from Jay-Z to Jimi Hendrix, they excel at a full deep bass but not one that takes over the whole song, i used to have a pair of MDREX71's and the bass just blew over everything, these are more like a pair of full size phones, the sound is full and something like a surround effect if that makes sense.
Personally i dont like the silicon style tips that you get with the Etymotics, it just feels uncomfortable and like someones jamming something in your ears, the Senn's are very similar to the Sony's in feel, they fit snugly in the outer canal without feeling as if your wearing earplugs. This is all of course just my view, if you can go and have a listen to a few but i can thoroughly recommend the CX95s for everyday use, they are hardwearing and ive seen a few complaints about noise from the cable but its no where near as bad as it was with the Sony's, i mean sure theres going to be some some rubbing etc but nothing to be concerned about.

Thanks for the info. I really don't like equalising my music any more than I have to and just lately it seems to be just for counteracting the above problem lol. I too have owned a pair or two of EX71s and I know exactly what you're saying. The EX32s are very similar. Looks like I'll be getting a pair of the CX95s sometime in the near future then.
