HD595, closed or open?

Bought these phones off Amazon recently. Everywhere in the Amazon review it mentions again and again that these are open type phones, and that what I was looking for, and the reason that I bought them. But, they are not open IFAIK, they are a closed design, the phones do not rest on the ear(open), they cover it(closed), so what are they open or closed? The reason I'm asking is because these might be good phones for a closed type, but I always thought that an open type would be far superior to an equivelent closed type, Drac

Re: HD595, closed or open?

They're open. I think you are confusing them with "on the ear" designs such as Sennheiser's px range. For example, the px100 are open and the px200 are closed but both are "on the ear" designs. The 595's are "around the ear" (they cup the ear fully) but are most definately open. A closed designed headphone is a sealed unit that reduces any sound leakage whereas an open designed headphone such as the 595 usually has a grill that leaks sound out and in. Both types can be either "on the ear" or "around the ear".
