Headphones . Where to start..

Right ill give you my spec, and see if any of you guys could help me out.

Budget: 100 quid or so.

- Will be used to be plugged into my Plasma tv for when watching blurays.
- Could be used at work, (quiet office enviroment), so i dont want sound leaking left right and centre.
- I commute alot so possibly used there. trains etc..

Ive heard some good reviews about

HD 25 - Sennheiser's - Are these any good for my requirements ? and also the Grado SR 80 ?

Any other suggestions, so i can go away and do my research

Re: Headphones . Where to start..

It would help if you told us what physical type of headphone you want as well - bud, over ear, resting on ear, that sort of thing. I'd suggest that if you want to use these headphones in a public situation, you think of buds. Over ear 'phones almost always leak noise, in spite of what their wearers think ...

If you're 'only' listening at home through the TV rather than through a decent headphone amp or something like Yamaha's Silent Cinema (which duplicates surround sound effects), then you might think of getting some modestly-priced over ear phones for home and bud phones for commuting/work. Unless there are details you've missed in your description, I'm not sure you'd notice the benefits of moving from e.g. £50 to £100 headphones given their intended use.

Re: Headphones . Where to start..

Yer if i was to solely use them at home with my tv & films and take my old cheap pair to work for mp3's on my ipod. Id probrably go for the "over ear" type.

How much would a Yamaha's Silent Cinema look to set me back, and what type of headphones would complement it ?

Re: Headphones . Where to start..

The Grado SR80s are open back headphones. I own some and they are great, but leak a lot, so no good for 'quiet' or public use!

You could also look at the Sennheiser HD280s, which I have heard good things about (but never tried).

It's a feature of most (all?) of the Yamaha home cinema amplifiers. So anything from £200 upwards.
