Sennheiser HMD 280 cables - Help Needed

Hi there,

I bought a pair of Sennheiser HMD 280's but the cable came unterminated. I'm a bit of a layman when it comes to this sort of thing but I'm going to give soldering the connections a go myself, I just need some advice.

I'm trying to hook up both the headphones and mic to an X-Fi drive bay so i'm guessing the best connection set-up would be to have two 1/4" stereo TRS connectors, one for headphones and one for the mic. I'm a bit confused about how to solder the connections though. The connection diagram is here...

...but all the wires are coming from a single cable so I'm not sure how I'm meant to split it, or if I'm even meant to split it at all. The same headset is available from some places with terminated wires and they seem to have gone for a 1/4" TRS for the phones and a 3-pin XLR connector for the mic, so I'm also considering if it's better to go for that setup and then get an XLR to 1/4" adapter for the mic.

Either way, I'm just looking for advice on this. Does anyone else have this headset and if so, what connectors do they have and how does the cable split? Even better, if anyone else bought these unterminated and soldered their own connections, any advice you could share would be great. Links to tutorials on soldering stereo TRS connectors would also be appreciated.

Many thanks in advance for any replies.

Terminate both mic and phone to TRS, soldering as guided. The XLR terminations are because practically all professional mic connections are XLR.

You could have a problem with the Mic. It will work, but I'm not sure if it'll work optimally off the X-Fi.
