Replacement headphones advice

Over the last 18 months I've been struggling with ear problems, so am switching from in-ear phones to headphones. They'll be mainly used for my iPod when commuting. As this is quite heavy use, 2-3 hours per day, I'm after something quite robust. Especially where the cable plugs into the player as that's the place most of my previous earphones go first.

Can anyone help me out with some recommendations? Budget's up to £30, although might go slightly higher if there's a significantly better one for a few quid more.

Thanks

Re: Replacement headphones advice

Sennheiser PX100 (leaks more noise out) or PX200 a bit more isolated. You should be able to get both for your budget. They are relatively strong, have good sound quality and can be driven well enough by an ipod.

Re: Replacement headphones advice

Thanks for the reply. I think the PX200 looks the better bet as I'll be on a train a lot of the time, so the less noise leakage the better.

x2 on the PX100. PX200 don't sound as good but yes, they do isolate slightly better.

Really? That's the first bad review I've read about them. What's so bad about them?

As opposed to simply posting the above,it would be a lot more helpful to actually qualify your problems with the PX200.

Re: Replacement headphones advice

PX100 are a big no no. They're fantastic headphones, but absolute arse for commuting as you know that if you turn it up enough to hear well then everyone else around you will be listening too. I switched to in-ears for commuting and never looked back. I've tried the PX200 twice, first time I thought they were horrendous (though I should point out they were the noise cancelling version, I had that function off, but there still may be differences between them), but the second time (in the noisy Regent Street Apple Store) I was actually fairly impressed. More scooped than the nicer mid range presentation on the PX100, but great. Could hear clearly, and the person with me said there was no leaking.

The thing about the PX200 is that your ears and how you place the headphones on them play a huge part in how good they sound, hence why there's such polar opinions.

Thanks for that. I do prefer in-ear phones myself but I keep getting ear infections and earaches, so anything I can do to help my ears I have to try. I know the sound won't be as good as in-ear phones, but it's worth a small sacrifice to be honest. I'll order the PX 200's and make sure I put them on correctly!

For the price they are good and Ive heard quite a lot of headphones. You want some isolation, reasonable sound quality and a low price. Mate you could get a lot worse. You also Have the Koss Porta Pro's but they don't 'look' as good.

Re: Replacement headphones advice

Porta Pros are open back like the PX100 so they have the same leakage issues.

They have no bass. None. Sound ok until you compare them with any 'phone with decent bass and then its blindingly obvious all the time.

I didn't want to ram my opinion down your throat but did want you to know there are alternate views on these cans, and I thought you might be able to perhaps do a little research yourself rather than have me spoon feed you the info. Even on this forum alone its been said many times that these cans have no bass.

Yes the problem with PX200 probably is that you have to get them to seal round your ears in order to get some bass. The trouble is that most people have ears shaped in such a way that it is not possible to get a good seal regardless of changing position.
I own these cans as a result of me thinking they would be basically a closed PX100, and they are not. I'm just trying to help people avoid making the same mistake I made.

True about leakage. I don't have a bass issue with the px200 maybe I have unique ears If you want better bass then in ears isolated are the best or closed back like the HD25 but these have a much higher cost.
