Question From A Complete Idiot Regarding Headphones & TV

Hi folks,

Just joined and as you have seen from my thread title, I'm totally clueless. I hope someone out there can help me or at least point me in the correct direction.

I bought a very cheap portable TV yesterday from Asda, to put in my conservatory. It's a Durabrand PTV 3607 and if you go here you will see a very crappy picture of it near the bottom of the page:

http://www.genuinecopies.tv/remotes/.../durabrand.htm

Here's the important bit...

When I bought it, I thought it had a headphones socket in the front. I was wrong. What it has are two AV sockets instead - one white and one yellow. The yellow one says 'video', but the white one has 'audio' written next to it and a picture of a musical note. My question is this:

Is there any way I can use the headphones with the audio socket? Is there a connector or something similar I can add on so it will fit in the socket and if so, where, why, how and how much!

Ok, that's really about it. If any genius out there is feeling pity (rather than the urge to mock! ), then I would appreciate some input. Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,
Ian K

I am afraid those sockets are for video and audio IN. They are there so that you can plug in another temporary video source, eg a camcorder. Are there no other connectors on the TV?

Afraid not. That's what I get for buying cheap. Not to worry. I just thought I'd check. Thank you for the very prompt response and for explaining it to me.

Best regards,
Ian

Re: Question From A Complete Idiot Regarding Headphones & TV

What about at the back? Surely it has a SCART connection (rectangular(ish) shaped with 20 small pin sockets). If so, using a AV SCART breakout adaptor you should be able to get L/R stereo audio output. But you will need to put that through an amp or use headphones with built in amplification to be able to hear anything.

If you don't have an amp or such headphones the cost of this solution I'd guess makes it a bit pointless. There's nothing else sensible I can think of that you can do.

Re: Question From A Complete Idiot Regarding Headphones & TV

If you are using an external freeview or sky box, you could take the audio output from the box into a hi-fi or amplifier, and then connect headphones to the hi-fi/amp.

If the freeview/sky etc box doesn't have a dedicated audio output, you could get a switchable scart-phono adapter and connect it to the second scart output on the box, set it to OUT and connect a phono cable from the adapter to hi-fi/amp. This is what I have done with my freeview box connected to my TV (which doesn't have headphone socket).
