Do I need an AV amp?

About to get a new telly, either LG PG6000 / Panny PX80. Would ideally like surround sound speakers etc., however my use would be limited as it would probably keep kids awake. Got to thinking about headphones and wondered do I need an amp for this or should I just plug them into the telly. Would like the impression of surround sound through phones if possible. Advice and recommendations greatly appreciated.

Re: Do I need an AV amp?

Hi gkw,

If you search the threads on this section, you'll find some where we talked about this.

I recommended the Yamaha AV amps that have the 'Silent Cinema' feature, which is surround sound for headphones.

Others liked the idea of a headphone amp with built-in Dolby Surround.

Re: Do I need an AV amp?

Thanks for reply. Think AV amp will be way to go as I could then add speakers as time goes by. Saw yamaha 6040 on amazon, any thoughts on this?

Cheers.
