Do you use a headphone amp with a AV receiver ? Noob Alert!

Stupid newbie question. Can you use a X-can headphone amp in-line with the AV reciever or do you use it on its own. I would like to be able to use all the inputs that my reciever has but my headphone amp only 1 input but it has 1 output as well

Yes, use the front pre-outs or, alternatively, the vcr1 or vcr2 outputs, if they're not being used.

Of course, it'll only be stereo.

You certainly can, but you wouldn't always want to. You want to feed the best quality analogue signal you've got directly into the headphone amp. If the only D/A converter in the system is an AV amp, then that's the only thing you can connect it to. But if you have a CD player with analogue output then you might get better sound quality by hooking the headphone amp directly to the CD player outputs rather than using the AV amp. (Or you might not - it depends).

Well i plugged my Ipod classic 160GB into it the HP amp alone and it sounded "angry" (very noisy) with my 650s. i then pluged the HP into the ipod without anything in-line and it sounded fine if a bit quite (which i expected)

You only need to connect the output on the headphone amp if you need to use the vcr loop-through
to connect a vcr as well, in which case, take the output from the headphone amp to the input of the
vcr and the output of the vcr back to the receiver.

Otherwise, you only need to take the output from the receiver to the headphone amp and plug your
'phones into the headphone amp.
