Upgrade from HD465 TO HD555/595?

Will I hear much of a difference if I Upgrade from Senn HD465 TO HD555/595?
or even Grado 60/80's?
I'm a bit of a tart taste wise when I listen to music (i.e. ill go with anything).
My cd is a NAD C 521BEE and the amp is a NAD C 320BEE

So should I spend some money in the persuit of sound quality? or keep the HD465's
thanks,
Dizz.

the answer is yes and no. some may say that things like 'the bass will be tigghter' 'more definition on the top end' 'better soundstaging' etc, but to jump from the HD595's won't be the same as jumping to the Grado's.

personally, i always found the Nad leaning to the slighly warmer side of neutral, so to balance that out, i wouldn't necessarliy go for the Sennheisers, unless it's the HD25-1 which are abnormally forward for a pair of Sennheisers.

Grado would be an obvious choice, but some complain about the lack of sound staging (not me). if you don't want a lot of bass in your sound, then i'd go for a pair of Denon AH-D1000 or a pair of Audio Technica's.

i've always wanted a pair of Goldring DR's but i've never got around to buying a pair.

Re: Upgrade from HD465 TO HD555/595?

So to recap

Senns 555/595 = good, but not so good with my NAD cd player
Grado Sr 60/80 = great but uncomfortable/fragile, no sound staging(ish)
Goldring Dr150 = great all rounder, cheaper option and gaining a fan base?

I was leaning to the Grado sr80's but have read about poor/cheap build quality and bits breaking off, also poor bass and sound staging, and low comfort levels. (Strange as they got top marks from What HiFi)

So now top of my list is the Goldring dr150's which are cheaper, more comfortable to ware, have good all round quality in both sound and the way they are made, but they just seem to be the underdogs in this battle.

Does anyone have a link to a review of the Goldring 150's? I know What hifi did one but cant find it on the net.

£60 inc p+p for the goldrings is soooo tempting I just need a little more convincing.
thanks.

and it's strange how many magazines still think the ipod is the best sounding MP3 player. yet after trying the iaudio F2, i know that wasn't the case.

Grado's aren't bad at all, and i don't quite buy into the "lack of or no sound staging" argument, but it has been a while since i last heard my SR125's which i gave away. in fact i still stand by the iGrado's being THE best portable headphones under the £35.

you should look at the Alessandro MS-1 which are modded pair of SR80's for not much money. But i have to say as a bass head, the grado SR range don't really cut the mustard for me. i'd rather have a pair of Denon AH-D1000's.

this is the only review i got.

Chad wrote the following;

I would suggest the Goldring DR100 at the $100 price point. I love my DR150's (sold my grado SR225's with no regrets) and I want to buy the DR100's for portable use.

I loved the firm endorsement of the Goldrings. The particular comment that won me over is the part where Chad says in brackets,

(sold my grado SR225's with no regrets)

That's a powerful endorsement if ever there was one. I do have the Goldrings in my sight, and they seem to have nothing but positive comments.
the only other option is (dare i say it) headfi.org

HI, How did you get on with the DR150's? I'm thinking of thinking of upgrading from my SR HD485s.

Thx...

I would be interested as well, I currently have a cheap pair of Panasonics which I've always like but would like something better for around 50-60 pounds. I like the sound of the Goldringer headphones and would appreciate any thoughts.

Just adding my encouragement for an update.

The Goldrings are very tempting, but I think many of us would like a few more user recommendations, before buying.

Thanks.

I'd get the 595s. Definitely. They're £87 on amazon. Take a look.

I have the Ultrasone HFI-780. They're £125 from the distributor in the UK. The grados didn't do it for me. You need to take a listen. The 595s will be a big step up on your current Senns. A really good big step up. Enjoy.

I bought the Senny 595's the other day. Lovely sound and very comfy. I asked my local Richer Sounds to price match amazon (£85) and they said we can beat them by £5, so I had them for £80.

Re: Upgrade from HD465 TO HD555/595?

OOOPs i forgot to come back with my opinion of the Goldring 150's, sorry.

well I still have them and i do like them they sound best with acoustic music and vocals but a bit messy when listening to rock music.
They started off with lots of sibilance that made it annoying to listen to any vocalists but that has all but disappeared with extended use.
They are comfortable to wear but i find my ears getting a bit hot after an hour or so use.
Bass is good but not fantastic and the midrange is great.
So all in all would i buy them again? yes i would and im just about to buy some for my father who likes modern jazz and liked the way they separated the instruments when he listened (jazz sounds like a mess to me though)
good luck and happy listening.

Re: Upgrade from HD465 TO HD555/595?

The thing with Senns is that they are massively comfortable. I can't understand how people can buy Grados (nothing to do with the sound quality! Before I get flamed) purely from a comfort point of view for extended listening. The ear pads don't do it for me, the circumference on the cans is a bit lacking and don't get me started on the way they are attached to the head band.

I can fall asleep in both my Senns and its not a problem and they still sound decent.

Re: Upgrade from HD465 TO HD555/595?

bear in mind dizz that good cans need time to settle down(maybe 200 hours)....they may sound bright and agressive to begin with, but will mellow after this time.

Generally speaking my experience of the dr150's are that they are awsome.....

Unamped they blow any series 5 senn out of the water imo(and amped actually).....i strongly recommend the asus xonar d2 soundcard to pair with these cans.
Online most threads you come across compare them to the hd600 rather than the hd595......which is strong reccomendation in itself.

I have seen review roundups including the dr150's where the goldrings are the cheapest cans in the group by over £50 and still outperform certain other brands over £100.

They ship with a lovely silver plated qed custom detacheable lead....and are only cheaper as they are a native UK company.

Grado in the states are dirt cheap as they are made in brooklyn(from what memory serves).........same thing with goldring in the UK.
