headphones for the one-eared man

Hi,

can anyone tell me if headphones that come with a stereo/mono switch typically just mix the left channel (connector tip) to both ears, or are they capable of mixing both input channels down to a mono signal for presentation to both ears?

Reason I ask is 'cos I have a relative who's totally deaf in one ear who wants to use a standard pair of closed-back headphones -- so he needs input channels mixed down to mono. An alternative would be to put together an adapter based on a simple mixer with a pair of few-Kohm resistors.

Thanks, but don't the Maplin stereo/mono adapters just short left and right channels together? (The ones I've had in the past do.) I believe this to be a bad thing for your amplifier circuitry.

Re: headphones for the one-eared man

They do a mono only plug which will just pick up the one channel only.

If you want the sound to be mixed down to mono then an adaptor won't do this by itself I don't think.
