Wow, impressed by the headphone hoarders out there
I use a pair of Bose Quietcomfort phones at work. Yeah not the best pair in existence but my boss paid for them and they do a good job drowning out the background noise when trying to debug code. Sometimes I just put them on without music to get some blissful quiet.
A pair of Shure earbuds for the iPod during transit. I like them, they are entry level buds, I can't tolerate them in my ears for long periods but for the 20 minute commute they are perfect. Considering an upgrade since the sound is definitely lacking in bass and general dynamics.
I just got a pair of Sennheiser SD650's, they arrived last night. I spent a few hours listening to them. Funny, at first I thought the right speaker was flawed since I could hear definite resonance at certain frequencies. Turns out the recording was at fault. Many people say these cans will mercilessly point out flaws, well they are correct. The detail and clarity is amazing, Nine Inch Nails' Downward Spiral on SACD sounds pretty mind blowing, so does Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon on SACD. I hear the Sennheisers really open up after prolonged listening, can't wait to get more use out of them.
I have an old pair of Sennheiser HD455 kicking around, now with the 650s in the house I doubt I will ever put those on my head again.
I use a Denon DVD2200 as the player and a Denon AVR4308 as amp. I hear much about dedicated headphone amps. Worth looking into? I like the sound of my Denon gear, I put them both in pure direct mode and so far no complaints. I guess I have nothing to compare to.
