How many headphones do you have, or need?

I'm asking this because at the moment I seem to be going through a 'headphone moment'. Daft I know and I'm getting a little wrried as I'm now looking at the Amazon priced Sennheisers, and thinking of buying either the 595, 600 or 650.

At this point I counted what I alleady have, minus all the in-ear ones i have got with various players that all sit in a tin.

3 pairs px-100 (all used with portables)
A pair of RS-45 cordless (no longer used)
A pair of HP-25SP (find the sound too 'closed-in')
Grado SR-80 (too bright)
Equation RP-21 (lovely, but I know I can get better)

I run the cans from a Beresford DAC, my NAD C352 or two battery headphone amps, and I listen to all types of music allthough mainly rock (yes I know the SR-80 should be ideal for this)

So the dillema is do I buy any of the above to get an improvement. Yes I could audition them all, but every headphone I have owned allways seem to change after they have been run-in, and in most cases I have found quite drastically so. So trying them seems a bit pointless.

And

Does anyone own more so I don't feel so guilty..

Paul.

Re: How many headphones do you have, or need?

Hmm. I have some old BeyerDynamic DT-531 'phones which now only work in one ear. I have some DT-231s which are supposed to belong to my girlfriend but which she never uses. Some Sennheiser RS120s, ditto. I use Sennheiser MX500 in-ear things at work. Then there's a Medusa Speedlink setup for gaming. Normal headphone use is Sennheiser HD650 + Graham Slee Solo amp. And I've just acquired a Philips SBCHD1500U system on eBay. So I guess I am just as bad as the rest of you.

HD650 = for what it's worth.

I've had many but I only kept my Denon D2000s. They're perfect.

Re: How many headphones do you have, or need?

Up until last year, I only had one or two pairs, but after spending a lot of time (and money!) on finding the right pair of in-ear phones, I have loads:

Sennheiser SE530
Sennheiser CX300 x2
Sony EX90
Sony EX85 x2
Goldring GX500
Sennheiser PX200
Sennheiser HD25SP

Only the SE530 and the HD25SP get regular use. I am looking for a nice high end pair for home use (poss HD650), and then that will be it.

Re: How many headphones do you have, or need?

Oh dear ...

1) Sennheiser HE60 my best ... but currently out for repair
2) Grado RS1 - Used almost daily (I work form home a lot hehe)
3) Sennheiser HD650 - One of my son's use it for game playing (Playstation in the next room to living room). I also use for downstairs in music room and montoring.
4) AKG701 I use as alternative to Grado RS1 or other son uses when playing game with his brother
5) PX200 sennheiser. When travelling in car (like I did when on hols obviously I wasn't driving). Also my daughter uses it. Also used for plane (twice a year by wife)
6) Shure e500. Used maybe twice a week or more. When I go into the office and walking, shopping, etc.
7) Sennheiser 201 - Not used going sell next month
8) Sennheiser 280 - Not used that much except when recording video. Used as portable monitors but may get some other closed headphones so will sell next month.
9) Audio Technica - C7 in ears. Used as alternative to e500 (if I need to hear the phone ring), etc
10) sennheiser 500 - Not used must sell soon
11) Sony 21's in ear - Not used hardly except on plane/train (children use them when travelling in car, train, plane) - so will keep
12) Sennheiser x90 (tried as alternative to audio technica) - don't use must sell.

So as you can see I've tried to convince myself I do need more than one and if you listen to music a lot I think you probably need at least 2. If it's part of your living maybe three. All the rest maybe we don't need.

I reckon a full open air design, a portable in ear and maybe a closed back for monitoring. The issue is (we say to ourselves) they don't all work ok in the various environments one thing I do know is I will be selling about four of them real soon.

Re: How many headphones do you have, or need?

i lost count at 45 pairs, so please don't make me name them all. i think in there, i have 15 pairs of sennheisers.

my favourites........i think the best value are:

iGrado

Jbl reference 410 (you've probably never hear of them, which is a shame)

Equation RP21 (better than the HD280's

Ultimate Ears metro.fi (thinkinhg about getting the super.fi 4)

Crossroads mylars X3 (again hardly known, shame!)

Alessandro MS1 (stritchly speaking, i dion';t own a pair)

Kossart i10

Kossart i40 (both dirt cheap and brilliant, only available in sweden at present, but that's about to change)

and i've gotta go

although i have to say i love my HD25-1's and the HD650's ....naturally!

Blast I gave in. I ordered a pair of HD650 at Amazons marketplace (£160 + £5 p+p) At that price I couldn't resist. I just hope the rest of my gear does them justice after all I've read about them.

Re: How many headphones do you have, or need?

HD650 delivered this morning. First impression very nicely packaged, but they are big, much bigger than I thought. They are light but feel bulky in your hands but on your head they are very comfortable after a few minutes. The sound is already better than what I have and from all the other posts will improve further.

I wish I had bought them before and saved my money on the others.

The first headphones I ever owned were Sennheiser 424x which I threw about 7 years ago when the left speaker was distorting very badly after falling into a sink of water a few months earlier. I only discovered this week that I could have repaird them. I should have just stuck with Sennheiser. I just love their sound character (ok maybe my 25's were a mistake)

I have the HD595's and they do break in nicely after a few weeks use - so I'm sure you'll find the same with your 650s.

Re: How many headphones do you have, or need?

Wow, impressed by the headphone hoarders out there

I use a pair of Bose Quietcomfort phones at work. Yeah not the best pair in existence but my boss paid for them and they do a good job drowning out the background noise when trying to debug code. Sometimes I just put them on without music to get some blissful quiet.

A pair of Shure earbuds for the iPod during transit. I like them, they are entry level buds, I can't tolerate them in my ears for long periods but for the 20 minute commute they are perfect. Considering an upgrade since the sound is definitely lacking in bass and general dynamics.

I just got a pair of Sennheiser SD650's, they arrived last night. I spent a few hours listening to them. Funny, at first I thought the right speaker was flawed since I could hear definite resonance at certain frequencies. Turns out the recording was at fault. Many people say these cans will mercilessly point out flaws, well they are correct. The detail and clarity is amazing, Nine Inch Nails' Downward Spiral on SACD sounds pretty mind blowing, so does Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon on SACD. I hear the Sennheisers really open up after prolonged listening, can't wait to get more use out of them.

I have an old pair of Sennheiser HD455 kicking around, now with the 650s in the house I doubt I will ever put those on my head again.

I use a Denon DVD2200 as the player and a Denon AVR4308 as amp. I hear much about dedicated headphone amps. Worth looking into? I like the sound of my Denon gear, I put them both in pure direct mode and so far no complaints. I guess I have nothing to compare to.

Re: How many headphones do you have, or need?

This thread is right up my audio canal.

I have a huge stash of cans. I've no idea why. I'll try and work it out as I go along.

Beyer DT770 pro: That's easy, these are my main headphones for listening to all types of music.

Project Headbox: For the above.

Panasonic RPHC300: Beats me. I've been on one plane in the last ten years.

Panasonic RPHTX7K: They look nice ? But I don't see them when they are on my ears, and no-one else has ever seen them anyhow. Actually, they're presently in the original case. In a cupboard. In the cellar.

Phillips HE591: Originally bought for ipod and NDS. I don't own a NDS or any kind of mp3 player.

Beyer DT48e: I would still use these if they weren't in pieces. I used them a lot at one time so maybe I should sell some of the above to get them fixed.

My Headphone Cemetry: A huge box of skeletal remains including some freshly buried sets of Koss and countless lovely/ugly/broken/beige 'phones from the 1970's & 1980's.

Re: How many headphones do you have, or need?

My inventory was too much - so a friendly burglar decided to lighten my load a little.

Amongst other things took my Ipod 30gb, the backup 8gb nano, my custom ACS T2 iem's; the v-moda vibes in the same case, my main portable amp RS Tomahawk. Including the protective cases, leads etc as this was all in my large laptop briefcase.

Oh and he kindly took my 3 month old Ford Focus, and even my watch & phone.

So now I'm busy getting in all the insurance replacements, the insurance company have been very good though explaining what custom iem's are and what a headphone amplifier is was fun (not!)- let alone the costs.

The T2s are ordered.
Ipods will be coming via Argos replacement vouchers. Probably a classic 80gb and an Itouch as backup this time.
Vmodes will not be re-purchased will use those funds on the iTouch instead.

Keep receipts for all your portable hi-fi gear it helps in circumstances like this.

Stress is my new middle name for the next few weeks

Re: How many headphones do you have, or need?

grado sr 80's and goldring dr150's. I never use the sr 80's anymore, and the goldrings get used for at least 5 hours a day. I love them, i've stood on them, sat on them and completely abused them, yet they still keep going. great 'phones.

Senny hd650 next.

oh, there is my tesco value £5 teknika phones. Really good phones for the money. I remember being shocked how little there was between the £5 phones and the sr 80's. I wore those phones daily for some 6 months without any ear pads (they fell off). It was character building to say the least.
