Pio SE-DIR2000C, Pio Ax5i, Pio 868 triple threat-would love some help please!!

Ok the new headphones arrived today and I've been scratching my head over this for a while - perhaps I just can't do what I want to do - I'd wlecome any expertise

I have a Pio 868 connected to a Pio ax5i connected by i-Link - DVD and Sacd etc

I have a PC connected to AX5i connectd by the usb (for music)

I just bought the 2000C headphones and had planned to output from the Ax5i using the Digital Out1 toslink connector of the ax5i connected to the optical in 1 connector on the the headphone base

The theory being that any signal routed in to the ax5i could be routed out to the headphones.

However I can't seem to get a signal form the ax5i digital out1 connection?
Is that because the signal inward is ilink?
Is it not possible to do what I'm trying to do
I have read the ax5i manual closely and there is very little about digital out1 functionality
I have looked at the pictures in the headphone manual - all them have the source (ie DVD) directly connected to the headphone base.
Aarrgh

I assume its my fault - surely it shouldn't be this difficult????

btw The headphones work ok because I hooked up the DVD player directly and it was fab

Thanks a lot
Barry
