Best headphones for quiet office?

Hi Everyone,

On the recommendation of What HiFi? magazine and scouting around on board such as this, I just recently bought a pair of Grado SR60s as a replacement for the in-ear buds of my new iPod Nano. Whilst I am very impressed with the SR60s, unfortunately they are relatively useless for what I need them for.

I tend to listen to music virtually all-day in my office whereas others around me don't. Therefore my gripe with the SR60s is that they leak much more sound than I thought they would, meaning that my colleagues unfortunately have to suffer the annoyance of hearing what I'm listening to almost as loud as I am (yes the Grados are that bad). Whilst no one has complained I feel very self conscious about listening at higher volumes and as I'm sure you're aware sometimes a song just warrants being played that little bit louder.

Therefore, I was wondering if anyone could recommend which headphones will suit my needs best? I need a pair that are comfortable for wearing over long periods of time, sound as good as possible and won't annoy my colleagues.
I'm not too keen on in-ear buds as I find that they hurt my ears even after a relatively short time and feel a bit stupid wearing the huge Behringer 'phones I bought for using with my Synthesizer. Ideally I'd like a pair that sits somewhere in the middle - kind of like the Grados really.

I've been recommended the Sennheiser PX200s, which could be an option, but I would a few more opinions of people of have 'been there, done that' so to speak. Obviously I'd appreciate any help you can give as I don't really want to waste another £60 trying to find the right ones!

Thanks in advance,

Adam.

Oh and I know of a guy selling some cheap Grado SR60s if anyone wants them?

Re: Best headphones for quiet office?

I was going to mention the PX200s as soon as I saw the title of the thread.

I've used them in my office for a few months and have never had a complaint about sound leakage. My one word of warning would be that they need a minute of two on the head before they settle in. The cushioning on the ears has to warm up and press into your ears a bit before you get a seal, but after that they're lovely. They're also surprisingly loud, and have a fantastic deep bass response which is lovely when I'm listening to my preferred loud rock music. They're good for other music as well, not just the heavy stuff. Don't bother with the PX100 though, they're leak central, due to the open backs.

Also because they have a vinyl material they can get sweaty on the ears but sound wise they are good.

Re: Best headphones for quiet office?

Second vote for the PX 200s here, if you are going to leave them in the office then great but they will come with a carry case to prevent damage if taking them back and forth from home to work. If I'd bothered to use my carry case they wouldn't have broken after a year, but in year 2 they can be posted straight back to Senny for a replacement.

In the office and on the tube, you would have to turn them up to painful volumes before they started to disturb other users. It's the mark of good headphones that you can turn them down, still enjoy your music but also be able to hear the over-loud iPod in ear set from someone five seats away who'll be deaf in 10 years' time.
