Denon AH-D2000

Hi. Anyone who has these let me know what they sound like leakage-wise. I mean, do they hold the sound in well at medium to high volume levels? also if anyone has the 1000 version any experience shared much appreciated.
Thinking of buying these from audiocubes.

Re: Denon AH-D2000

I've had the D2000 since mid-August (also bought from Audiocubes ) and the sound quality is fabulous especially if you like good strong, but not bloated, bass.

They keep the sound in very well - people I've asked said they couldn't hear a thing from a metre away, although I don't listen at excessivley high levels. BUT they can let outside noises in. I found I could hear the sound of a hairdryer when fairly close (don't ask!) to it. Moving a bit further away solved that problem. On the other hand, I've missed a couple of phone calls while listening because I haven't heard the phone ringing less than a couple of metres away.

I bought mine unheard, after reading the head-fi threads fairly exhaustively, and smile every time I listen to them. My other cans are the E530 - for taking to work. I honestly can't see myself upgrading either pair in the forseeable future and I do like new toys!

Forgot to say that they're also incredibly comfortable. But I've got a fairly small head and found the headband moved in unexpected directions whenever I leaned forwards or backwards. A Beyerdynamic headband cover solved that problem. If you need further details, just ask

Re: Denon AH-D2000

Hi. Thanks very much for your reply. I am extremely tempted to buy these. I have just received some beyerdynamic 770's and will be returning them to amazon on monday. They just didnt impress me.

Im no audiophile. I just know what i like when it comes to my music. Im glad you sound very happy with your Denons. I might just have to go for them.

I suppose that sending them back if necessary would be alot more problematic since buying them from Audiocubes. How long did they take to deliver if you dont mind my asking?

I have the classic Denon ADV-500SD cinema surround dvd/av receiver. So i know first hand the quality that Denon products are.

cheers,

Re: Denon AH-D2000

I ordered on 4 August and paid an extra 10USD for 4-day international delivery. Audiocubes did take a while to "process" the order but that might have been because they'd been awaiting stock. The headphones are actually despatched from Japan and took precisely 4 days (including a weekend) to arrive once they'd been sent. I took delivery on 14 August.

Pricejapan might also be worth a look. I've read on Head-fi that they're very quick and always put a low figure on the customs forms, meaning you don't pay as much in tax/import duty.

I'd be very surprised if you didn't love these headphones straight out of the box but one good thing about buying this way is that if you decided to sell them, you'd probably easily cover your costs.

Well you know what. Ive only gone and ordered myself these. Ordered yesterday. Has gone to 'processing' today.
So if theyre in stock, might even get them delivered sometime this week. I too chose the more pricey 4-7 day delivery method.
I also asked them in the order process if they wouldnt mind marking the package as a $50 gift.Hopefully this will help with the tax/import duty.
Thanks again for you time. I think im going to like these.

Good luck with the quick delivery and the "gift" idea. Wish I'd thought of it when I ordered! Post your impressions when you get them.

I have heard it said that when the marked order value is less than the real value this kyboshes the insurance, if any. Does anyone know anything about this?

I've been lucky with paying import duty, FWIW, as I've only been caught in two orders in about eight orders. Most recently I bought an item (value $240) shipped from Hong Kong, and the first one was defective so they sent a second one, and neither were caught for duty.

Dont know much about it myself to be honest. just read on another forum that it can help avoid the extra costs. Hopefully it will. But if it dont, the way i lookat it, compared to uk prices, ill still be getting a bargain.

Hi. Still waiting for my phones. The online tracking only shows 2 transactions in china. Nothing about uk. I suppose this strike might slow things down unless its delivred by a courier over here? Still, looking forward to using them.

If you still looking christam, do you remember who actually delivred to your door?

thanks, pixel

Hi Pixel. It looks like I've just missed you. The delivery was by Fedex so if you've ordered the same service it's unlikely to be affected by any postal disruption at our end. As I said in an earlier post, once despatched the headphones took exactly 4 days to arrive. No hold-up in Customs - I thought maybe I'd got away with paying any extra by way of duties but was billed a few days later . Still, the overall cost was a lot cheaper than buying in the UK would have been. Hope they arrive soon!

No Fedex is not delivered by the post office, he did not say it was. Though Fedex (and other couriers) almost always will mean you get hit with a customs & admin charge, usually in the post a few days after delivery.

Just thought I'd let you know that you will be extremely impressed with these headphones. They sound incredible. I love the bass and comfort of them.

Only problem with mine though is that both earcups fell off after 2 weeks. Easily fixed with a bit of superglue though.

Good stuff. Lookng forward myself. How do you rate them for 'isolating and 'keeping the sound in'?
cheers,

cheers,
As said previously, at reasonable volume they won't leak any sound out at all. But at higher volumes it starts to leak quite a lot. But I doubt anyone could listen to them at the volumes I'm talking about.

They don't isolate very well. Better than open headphones, but not as good as all the other closed headphones I've used. I doubt you will disturbed while say, watching a film with them on or anything -- they still isolate to some extent.

Re: Denon AH-D2000

Received the Denons today surprisingly. All refernces marked as 'gift' $50 on box, and slightly worryingly the actual invoice too!
Well what can i say. Ive only had a quick look & listen for 10 mins lunchtime.
But these are great sounding, and looking phone right out the box.
Had to come back to work, but have left the phones listening to some music on repeat just to run them in a little.

Thanks to all here who have helped me decide to go for the denons, specially christam. cheers

Ill let you know if i notice these phones getting even better over time, and if i notice any niggles.

Glad they've arrived, just kicking myself for not saving a few £s by asking for a similar favour from Audiocubes! I've burned mine in through listening to them, mostly at weekends - I like to hear the changes as they gradually happen. They definitely do get even better with burn-in. I've heard the sound stage open up and the mids and highs become more balanced with the superb bass.

Enjoy

I assumed you ordered from AudioCubes or PriceJapan?

They underprice and label as a gift in an attempt to avoid customs. Pretty nice of them if you ask me. Although, when I bought AD700's I still got charged with customs fees regardless of it being a $50 gift.

You're pretty lucky not getting hit with customs as the 'gift' option is only valid if the sender is an individual. If the customs guys are feeling picky you can get a much worse penalty fine due to the sender incorrectly/falsely declaring them as a gift.

Re: Denon AH-D2000

well. i might not be out of the woods on that count yet. But as you said previously, these are at a bargain price with or without the xtra charge.

Funny you should say that about listening to the changes as they happen naturally. I was thinking the same myself only half an hour ago.

Im currently in the process of configuring firefly to play flac versions of my cd's from my HP Media Vault NAS to my Roku soundbridge. Its a bloomin nightmare, not even sure its possible. But i definately hear the difference, so itll be worth it in the end. And i reckon these headphones deserve either the original cd, or lossless digital versions.
Currently playin Nick Drakes best off in mp3 320k or something. Says its about 22% of the original for each song. Its still sounds pretty damn good though.

I agree, it did seem all a little dodgy. Maybe ive been one of the few to be lucky what with the strike and everything. Well ill have to wait and see if i get a letter in the post. All i know is ive still got what look to be a great sounding set of phones at a gtreat price. all be it with its risks due to purchasing from abroad. But im happy with my decision.

Re: Denon AH-D2000

Hi. Just a quick update. Great headphones. Good build quality. Sound could be a liitle light on bass, if you really like your bass.

Although i think its just that you get a good overall sound, rather than too bassy, or too tinny?

The phones sit on my head better than the beyers i recently tried. But i still prefer the tighter grip of my goldring 150's on my head. they feel more secure or something?

Saying that the Denons, are more comfortable in every other way. So overall i am very happy with my new headphones

...apart from the cable. As it appears to be woven material, it tends to sometimes get coiled up. Which is easily corrected by unplugging them, and unwinding the cable.

cheers, pixel

Re: Denon AH-D2000

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but are you guys still liking yours?

I am 90% certain I might buy these as I am looking for something with a little added excitement over the Senn HD650 I currently use. I tried some Grado SR80 to see if I liked the 'Grado' sound, but I dont think I get on with it really. I am encouraged by all of the praise that these Denons get, and it seems they've blessed these headphones with the signature Denon sound - that is lively, punchy and dynamic. Just the ticket I should think for the main use they would get which would be for movies and listening to music - mainly trance, pop and rock.

Also, they appear to be relatively easy to drive? I have a decent headphone amp, but sometimes I feel like a more sensitive headphone would be nice for that bit extra headroom when watching movies.

I've sold my Denon's, and bought HD650s today. So we're doing the opposite things. I'll let you know what I prefer once I get my HD650s.

I sold the Denon's because they have too much bass and a recessed midrange. Which isn't so great for the music I listen to now. They're really good for metal though - but I don't listen to that much any more, so I went with the HD650s as I've heard they're good with vocals.

Regarding amplifying the Denon's - don't bother. I've added a Darkvoice 332, which is a good tube amp to my setup and the Denon's didn't change too much. The bass tightened a little which brought out the midrange a bit, but not enough for me to keep the Denon's. I've heard the HD650s go very well with the DV 332 (livens them up a lot) which is why I bought the amp originally.

Re: Denon AH-D2000

Interesting. I dont think bass would be a problem on my system as I keep hearing some people saying that even the HD650 is overly bassy but thats not what I hear on mine - thats not to say there is a lack of bass as there clearly isnt but i cant imagine it being a problem...

I just feel like the 650s are little laid back for me, there is seemingly an ever present subtle veil to the sound which seems to subjectively keeps you at arms length from the action.

I even tried a sound processor (a Behringer Sonic Exciter) which does help a bit, but ultimately its difficult to change the fundamental character of the 650s.

So would you say the Denons are good for hard hitting music?

Also, there seems to be a huge difference in price for the Denons when bought here versus say the USA - I've seen them advertised for not much more than $200 over there, but over here, its rare to see them for less than £200, so almost twice the price!

Oh yeah, they are excellent for hard hitting music. Their PRaT is excellent, and the bass isn't overpowering (like the Beyer DT770 Pro's for example), there's just a little too much of it for my taste.

I sold mine for £120 the other day. I listed them on here for a while.
