Help needed rewiring PXC 250s with new jack

My Sennheiser PXC 250 lost sound in one ear, so I decided as they were out of warranty to attempt to put a new 3.5mm jack plug on.

I have succeeded in getting sound out of both ears now, but it appears to be the same channel??? Anyone got any experience rewiring headphones?

I have soldered the red wire to the ring, and the green to the pin, with the copper wire to the sleeve. Weirdly though, I had sound in both chanels with just the red wire.

Can anyone help?

(and yes I did remove the enamelling before soldering the tips of the wires)

Re: Help needed rewiring PXC 250s with new jack

The pxc-250's are an unservicable set of headphones.
If they are under warranty they are replaced not repaired.
If they are out of warranty they should be skipped.

Usually the wiring is

red-tip
green-ring
shield-sleeve

However the cable is designed to be unsolderable. It's usually got fiber running through it to make it almost impossible to get a good connection.

Re: Help needed rewiring PXC 250s with new jack

Just got a reply from a Sennheiser Service team leader, after making an enquiry on their website

Chris,

You should find that there are three wires: Red, green and copper coloured.

The green will be the left signal - tip of jack
The red will be the right signal - ring of jack
The copper will be the common connection - sleeve of jack
Have soldered the wires as above and its worked perfectly. Total cost of the repair 60p for a new 3.5mm jack plug.

I did have to burn the tips of each wire to remove the enamelling before soldering them, a lighter worked well for that.

I hope this helps others in the same position, saving an otherwise servicable pair of headphones.

Cheers
