Info Sennheiser HD650 £169.99 UK delivered

I've posted this in the AV bargains section but thought it worthwhile to mention here too, hope that's OK.

Such a good set of headphones and getting a deal from Amazon UK for a brand new pair is nice.

Cool Re: Info Sennheiser HD650 £169.99 UK delivered

Do you think these headphones are good for general use, i.e. movies, music, classic, hip hop, etc. I'm quite varied!

Mostly movies, and general music, jazz, classics and bassy music!

Would I need a headphone amp as well?

I have a Denon A1XVA Amp. Currently.

Re: Info Sennheiser HD650 £169.99 UK delivered

At this price they are a good general headphone. Yes they do benefit from a decent headphone amplifier but many folk are just as happy with them without one. I'd not recommend them for an ipod but for home equipment they should be fine and you could always pickup a headphone amp later.

Sorry I don't have any Deno gear so can't comment on the quality of it's headphone out, perhaps someone else can help.

Re: Info Sennheiser HD650 £169.99 UK delivered

The HD-650's are a serious set of headphones and in my opinion should only be used in a proffessional enviroment.

First of all they are an open capsule set meaning you hear a lot of ambient noise.
They are ideal of classical music for this fact alone.

I hope I never see the day I see someone using these headphones with an ipod.

Headphone amp is not a nessisity but definitly advisable.

General day to day use I wouldn't use them unless I was an audiophile but as they say horse's for course's.

Mmmmm.... I think for my current usage a 595 might be better, or a Denon headphone at a similar pric range would be sufficient for me.

Then, if I have a very strong urge to get something better....... I'll come back to this forum!

Man, I'd love to hear really fantastic sounds from a Headphoen and headphone amp! Have never heard sounds from these things before!

I'm a newbie to this.....

But the Amazon price is just fantastic I think.....; maybe theres a new headphone from Sein cming out soon......

Be careful with the £69.99 price on amazon though as its through market place and comes from germany so you could have warrenty problems in the future.

I just looked and it says they are supplied by Amazon UK and ready to ship, no mention of Germany or a marketplace supplier. I can only think there may have been no Amazon stock when you looked in which case the Amazon site takes you to a marketplace seller.

You must work for Sennheiser from those comments (in Ireland based on your forum name). Serious headphones yes but at the reduced price I'd use these daily no problems - with my portable headphone amps they'd be driven well enough even for an Ipod but Senn 650s on the tube is a bit too far even for me and i did use the Senn 590s on my commute for a while.

I guess the rumours of the next line of Senns could be true - HD700 mmm more money for me to spend.

best wishes

Steve

Did you needed to use a seperate headphone amp, as some users in these forums have mentioned?

Thanks.

I don't have a headphone amp, but would consider one in the future.

people just say its sounds better with an amp

the only thing is that when I hook it up to my Iriver MP3 player the volume level is lower volume at max output(40). still ok though.

be aware open headphones dont stop the sound going to other people in the room or house, some people say there louder outside than inside.
but they do sound great, and seam to get better after a week or so of running.

I normally use Sure inear E2c anyway for mobile music, these i have to turn right down (10) as the noise canceling makes it very quite.

Re: Info Sennheiser HD650 £169.99 UK delivered

I'm using a pair of HD600 (predecessor to the HD650) as my main headphones for music, and they work great with my iPod! The open-back and low sensitivity means that you can't really take these 'phones outdoors or use them in a noisy environment, but it's fine for indoor use. Anyway, who'd want to wear full-size 'phones outdoors anyway? At that price you can't go wrong with the HD650.

Im sure you wont regret the 650s I think the cable is only 3m, I bought a cable extener of Ebay for under £20 or use the Grados extender £25ish

btw I found the cable to the headphone much thicker on the 650 compared to the 600s (my wife stole my 600s, so I got the 650s) at 170ish for a £300 headphone, there a bargain.

HD650 'phones are very nice indeed; highly recommended. Personally I wouldn't recommend them for use with anything battery-powered, though - they benefit from being driven by something with a bit more kick. They can sound a little muddy with a low-powered source.

OK!

I'll think about ordering these either before or after I go on Holiday!

I'm now considering some fancy Denon ones! Made from wood, their about £260.00. Including delivery etc. from Japan! Not £500.00 in uk!

Or may get a pair of stax, if they work in the UK! As stax seems quite cheap from Japan, compared to UK prices, more than 60% cheaper!. I go to Japan, once per year!

I'm still deciding what to do! I think the 650, will be fantastic, the stax, probably over the top! The Denon, probably good aswell!

Stax systems can sound absolutely stunning. At first glance they seem very expensive because you have to pay for the "Energiser" as well as the headphones. (You can't just plug the headphones into a headphone jack, the energiser is compulsory). However, if you compare the price of a Stax system to a pair of dynamic 'phones plus a decent quality headphone amp, they're actually not bad value.

Hi,

I am thinking of a stax system, but only if I can get it from japan, and only if it works in the UK! Price and compatibility!

Otherwise I would not look at them at all!

Would it possible to get one of these, and then use a decent power converter to provide the power for them? They are 100 volts only!

I am still thinking of the 650s aswell! But I need to have a road map for all this hardware etc.!

best thing you can do is listen to a few of your short listed phones before deciding. grados are worth listening to as well.

Re: Info Sennheiser HD650 £169.99 UK delivered

hd 650 got 300 ohm impedance, meaning any use with battery powered mp3 players without headphone amp is not recommended. if u really want expensive headphones, go ahead and get them, but im sure 595s or even 555 will be more than enough for ipod use and these 2 will be much louder aswell (50 ohms).

650s are very very high end headphones and are specifically great for jazz/classical music. for rock/pop... they might seem a bit neutral (not a bad thing). 5xx series are a bit livelier and punchier which might suit you better.

Re: Info Sennheiser HD650 £169.99 UK delivered

Having used a pair of these HD650's for about a week now (i bought them off amazon for £175 all in) i can happily say they are the best headphones i have ever used. if you are someone who listens to an ecclectic mix of music, then look no further than these. Having said that, they really do benefit from some dedicated amplifying kit, or at the very least, power them from the headphone output from your stereo or AV amp.

If you are more of a rock lover or metal head, take a closer look at the grado's as the sennheiser sound signature can seem a little neutral or "veiled" when it comes to hard hitting rock.

Hm. Well, that's the first time I've heard anyone around here use the word "neutral" as a term of abuse.

Generally speaking, neutral is good: neutral equipment plays back the recording in exactly the same form that it exists on the disc; it makes it sound the way it is supposed to sound. Non-neutral equipment makes it sound different from the way the mixing engineer meant it to.

I really ca't agree with that. They're designed to accurately reproduce whatever you throw at them, and they do a stunning job.

Re: Info Sennheiser HD650 £169.99 UK delivered

I've had a set of hd650's for over a year now, and have to admit they are great headphones. I have used them with my g4 and g3 ipod unamped and although they still sound great dont expect them to get upto any sort of volume.

My main amp is a diy Millet Hybrid Tube amp and this does the job - there is definently and advantage to seperate amps. There are pleanty of commercial headphone amps out there, creek, music fidelity to name a few...
