Would a headphone amp help ?

Hi,

When working at home I have a pair of Beyer DT531 (about 10 years old) connected to a sony discman (personal cd player). I have the headphones up on the shelf and listen with the volume turned up. (i.e. the headphones are not on my head).

Would I get any benefit from adding a small headphone amp ? Would it actually be possible to connect the discman to the headphone amp ? What difference in sound quality and volume would I be able to hear ?

Finally, could anyone recommend a suitable headphone amp, new or second-hand ?

Cheers

Bob

Re: Would a headphone amp help ?

i've just brought a go-vibe V5 headphone amp. it comes with a 6" cardas mini to mini cable.

i brought it to give a much need boost of my large ultrasone 750's and my ipod shuffle, and so far i'm very, very impressed.

here's the link http://www.go-vibe-headphoneamp.com/Home_Page.html

i paid through pay pal and this was the exchange rate then 5/3/07

Currency Conversion: £41.06 GBP = $77.00 USD

that was the total including P&P and i have to say it's the best £41.06 investment i've made in a long time.

you might also want to consider a cmoy amp http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/sear...moy&category0=

Re: Would a headphone amp help ?

So you're using the headphones like speakers?

If so some actual speakers would be a better investment than a headphone amp.

Re: Would a headphone amp help ?

Hi,

thanks for the suggestions

Could a set of speakers be connected directly to a sony discman ? And if so can you recommend any of a small size - probably the size of travel speakers, I do have a £40 pair bought on a BA flight some time ago

I just thought that a headphone amp driving the headphones would provide better sound than the "travel-size" speakers

cheers

Re: Would a headphone amp help ?

The best portable speaker systems I have heard use NXT technology.

Take a look at the TDK Outloud

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Spicer-PSCDM.../dp/B00007G1LI

It's suprisingly good and really cheap. Worth a test a £3.

Alternativly look at some cheap PC speakers... they'll do the job.

And yes they will connect directly into a diskman
