£100 ih budget

I'm looking for some decent headphones to listen to music from my Arcam setup ( see sig) , I mainly listen to rock( mainly prog) and electronic music ( Jarre , Numan etc) so needs to have good bass but also excellent for those acoustic pieces I love . I was thinking a budget of around £ 100 , maybe a little more and must be comfortable.

I'd stick with your Arcam equipment and see how you get on before getting ahead of yourself with headphone amps.

Re: £100 ih budget

Ok i think I am down to the Beyerdynamic and sennheisers as the Grados look quite uncomfortable . I may be willing to go to £180 so maybe the 650's , is this worth it without an amp as I not going to bother with that for now , also how long are the cables for both?

Re: £100 ih budget

If you have that much then look at the Grado 325i (and they are not uncomfortable) and also the AKG701. I have the HD650 and even with better cable I think the AKG701 sound better and also you don't get a sound increase by pushing the headphones nearer it sounds just right and the comfort is better as the HD650 feel like clamps to my head (to me) compared to the AKG. Problem is when you start to get these type of headphones, amps do become a consideration but you have to get good quality to get any difference from the Arcam. For now though stick with the phones

Re: £100 ih budget

i'm now converted to ultrasone headphones. having recently traded both my grado SR 60 and 125 headphones to buy the Ultrasone proline 750's i'm hear to say that they far and away out perform any headphones i've previously owned, especially the SR125.

another reason for getting rid of the grado's was because they were so uncomfortable. sorry Reano but i have to disagree, they were uncomfortable. people said that you need time to get used to them, but never did. they were as uncomfortable now as they were when i first brought them.

the ultrasone speed and accuracy are better, and the grados won't get anywhere near the ultrasones for bass depth and speed.

they are heavy though and need a good week to break in.

if i was you, i would follow this link below and ask yourself if you could add another £9 to your original budget, and buy the proline 550's, which should be within your reach. or if you really want to spend more than the 750’s or 2500 might be your thing.

sorry but my grado's are well and truly history!

if you want gut thumping bass, with stunning clarity then buy try the Ultrasones.

i just had to have my say, no offense to any of the other suggestions.

Re: £100 ih budget

Grado cans are really comfy if you invest in some new foam thingies. Much lighter than alot of other headphones and don't exert alot of pressure on your head which I always find annoying after a while of listening.

foam thingies ..... i love that. anyway to business, which foam thingies were you referring to. even the flat pads of the Sr60's were a bit more bearable.

they felt like having two scouring pads either side of my head, instead of the SR125's which felt like having two fidgety hedgehogs strapped to each side of my head.

I believe the standard foam thingies to get to make Grados more comforable are the Senn 414 pads (yellow). Alternatively for those with deeper pockets there is a US company that sells adaptors that allow the use of Beyer pads (real comfort) on Grado headphones - google for headphile.com

Hey Matt no problem. I own the Grado RS1 and the Grado 80 b4 never been a problem for me comfort wise but each to his own. As for accuracy depends what you mean I have recorded live instruments and replayed them back and listened and the Grado's were more accurate to the original sound? Is that what you mean? If so the Ultrasone are very good. If you mean it has distorted bass (compared to the real thing) then that's another. Have loads of headphones and some have more bass but accuracy is another thing. Not many instruments have low bass. I prefer accuracy
I may get the Ultrasone and compare them to the other one's I have and see if it can replace any.

You are quite right I did mean the Senn pads, although I was having abit of a brain dead moment for my last post.

in one respect i wished i'd asked the question about how i could make my grado's more comfy, but on the other hand my Ultrasone 750's are superb

Re: £100 ih budget

Just had my new Grado SR225 from iHeadphones for about £155. They are lovely headphones and I'm using them with Arcam Amplifier, Arcam CD Player and Marantz tuner. Excellent retailer too, very quick and received plenty of info regarding the progress of my order.

Very happy with the SR225's performance. Recommended.
