Question Sony EX90 vs. Sennheiser CX300 - any opinions?

I've picked up a pair of CX300's today, and so far I'm pleased with them - much better than the Sony EX71's. I'm still considering picking up a pair of Sony EX90's and wonder if anyone has used both (EX90 and CX300's) that could offer a comparison.

I realise the Sony's are much more expensive and probably aimed at slightly higher end, just wonder if they're worth the money.

Cheers,

Tom

Re: Sony EX90 vs. Sennheiser CX300 - any opinions?

The EX90s do offer a genuine upgrade in sound quality to all of the basic model 'in-ear' type... from the likes of the JVC HA-FX55 right up to the Panasonic HJE70.

However if you need any isolation at all you can write off the EX90, as they let in a lot of sound althogh they don't leak sound that badly (but they do). They're very secure and comfy to wear, probably the most comfortable 'goes in ear' phone available. The problem is that you have to ask yourself what is the point of them going in the ear canal when there's zero isolation.

While the EX90's are notably better than the likes of the CX300, EX71, etc, headphone wise in terms of sound quality the EX90 is slightly trounced by the ~£15 Koss KSC75 clipphones (and while the Koss is superb value, it's not the giant-killer that some say it is). Since both offer no isolation at all they are directly comparable. Not quite worth it in my opinion because you can get more practical portable headphones for the same amount, but some might find the combination of discreet cool looks in an earphone format, excellent comfort and half decent sound quality - even if offset by the lack of any isolation - beguiling enough to buy it.

Re: Sony EX90 vs. Sennheiser CX300 - any opinions?

Thanks - so you would say the CX300 isolate better then EX90? In my limited use so far I would say they (CX300) definitely isolate better than the EX71's did - and for whatever reason stay in my ears better, though that may be down to the size and shape of one's own ears! ;-)

My primary use is in the gym, so both isolation and ability to remain 'in-ear' are quite important factors.

Cheers,

Tom

I wouldnt use them for gym work personally. They are too microphonic (i.e. you can hear things like the cable rubbing up against fabric and so on).

Could be wrong, but i'm sure i've heard people say they werent all that for gym use.
