Does anyone know to surround software which can be used on a PC.
A few years ago I remember coming across some software but can't remember what it was.
I've been to the Dolby website and tried the surround demo but it is not convincing for me. If you read the blurb, they talk about reflections off the walls (in the "virtual theatre") arriving at each ear at slightly different times to each of your ears. By re-creating these reflections using audio processing they re-create the theatre environment.
What they have missed is the selection of "ear shape". This is crucial to convincing surround sound. If you go outside into an open space and get someone to walk around you making a noise, you can instantly tell which direction the sound is coming from and this is without complex reflections from walls. The reason your brain can do this, is because the time delay between the sounds arriving at each of your ears
and the complex refections which occur off your outer ear provide all the information necessary for your brain to locate the sound in "3D space", (including sounds above you).

Now, I realise that at the moment no soundtrack is encoded with vertical (up down) information, so the surround is going to be in a horizontal plain. This is OK for most purposes.
Does anyone know of any software which has this ear selection and configuration? Sennheiser used to do a box I think.
