Question Need replacement headphones for use with portable audio/video player

Hi all,

After several years of use, my Koss KTX Pro headphones have finally given up the ghost, or rather, I killed them by tripping on the cord. I've repaired them in the past, but feel it's time to retire them and try something new.

So, what would you guys be able to recommend, bearing the following in mind:
  • bass response must be at least equal or better than KTX Pro
  • portability needs to be equal or better than the KTX Pro
  • in-line volume control isn't too important (these can be useful, but tend to break and cause problems often)
  • shouldn't cost more than £50 max.

So far, I haven't been convinced by the in-ear design... Mostly because I bought a set of Koss Plugs, and have NEVER been able to insert them in my ears successfully, regardless of how patiently I tried all of the supplied foam pads. I found all of them spring back to their full shape far too quickly for me to be able to insert them in my ear successfully.

I saw a lot of recommendations for Senn CX300s. If anyone has tried Koss KTX Pros and these, can they tell me how the bass compares between them.

FYI, I tried friend's Senn PX200 and was distinctly unimpressed with their lack of bass compared to my Koss.

Thanks in advance guys.

As a Koss fan have you considered these?

The first review starts with these words "The first word that comes to mind when I think of the Portapros is "Bass!" ...
The Portapros were on my shortlist for portable use but I thought they looked a bit "Cyberman" for me and went for some Senn PX100 (plenty of bass for me especially with the PA2V2 portable amp!)

Hi, thanks for the suggestion. I had Sportapros in the past, they were ok, but didn't last very long...

My problem is that I got used to (and like) the bass levels the Koss headphones provide. The other day I tried friend's Senn PX200s, they're supposed to be really good, but the difference in the (lack of) bass they had compared to my Koss'es was huge.

Any other players in my price range other than Koss and Sennheiser that I should consider?

I have the senn px100s and i felt the same about them when i first got them. One thing i have noticed though having owned them a while now is that they seem to need a short time to "warm up"! I tend to start with my volume set to near max but the longer i use them the more i turn the volume down as they seem to get louder. I have also found that the bass has improved - i used to use a bass boost feature but now they sound better without it.

Is there anyway you can get your friend to lend you his px200s for a day or 2 so u can give them a proper playtest?

Hmm, maybe worth a try. Thanks for the suggestion.

P.S. What's the real-world difference between PX100 and PX200 supposed to be (not talking about specs)?
