Question A fundamental question about amps

This is going to sound about as daft as it gets, but how do amps generally hook up to hifi systems? Via 6.4mm stereo in plug? Via RCA? Via some other plug/cable combo?

More importantly, if I bought a modestly priced amp in the £100-£150 range, what would I need to connect it to a DVD player that only has RCA outs?

Or am I asking how long is a piece of string?

Cheers in advance!

i'm sure someone else could give you a better answer but to get the ball running i think you hook it up to a 'tape' connection on your amp/reciever.
i think this is so that you can listen to multible sources, probably due to the fact that if a tape recorder was connected you could audio tape what ever was connected to you amp/reciever.
think it all connects via a 'in' and 'out' so you'd need a pair of audio cables.
sorry if thats a bit vague but like i said,i'm not sure meself.....i asked a similiar question a little while ago about listening to multible sources through a headphone amp and the answer was along these lines.

OK assuming we are talking headphone amp here:

DVD out rca are fine to connect to a hi-fi amp or directly to a headphone amp. Most headphone amps are rca in and 1/4" stereo jacks for the headphones (though there are 3.5mm ones in & out mainly aimed at portables).

Obviously connecting the DVD out to a headphone amp is fine unless you want to listen via speakers as well. AS Reevesy has said to do that you can connect the DVD to your hi-fi and if the hi-fi amp has a tape in/out you can connect the headphone amp to the tape out. This usually means the tape out can play any of the sources connected to the amps 'in' sockets. You may have a tape monitor button so you can record to tape without the sound coming from the speakers.

If the amp has direct pass through you would be able to play the dvd and listen through the headphone amp without turning on the hi-fi amp.

If that helps great, if not fire away with any questions.

Steve
