How much leakage from Open headphones?

Just wondering how much leakage you get from open headphones such as the higher end senns.

Say i'm listening at normal speech volume could someone hear else hear it?

well if there within 1-4 metres id say yeah, my family sits in the same room as me and with my Senn HD595s on moderate volume could be easily hearable...

I had to turn my music a notch down to the point I couldnt enjoy it like....

In end sold them off, but I guess as long as your not in a wooden house or paperwalls or both like me about 6-7 metres and i guess they couldnt hear u..... but its noise and subjective so u would have to really try n see !

Id recommend closed if you worried...

I think most open headphones leak pretty bad. But the Grado's seem to top it. The senns just below it.

Would a closed headphone be out of the question?

Subjective apparantly, apparantly closed headphones wont quite sound as natural/airy which many like but some will prefer the sounds from closed pair.

Its only something your ears will hint at

It depends on your taste's and preferences.

The one problem with closed cans if you can find one you like is in the summer they can get uncomfortable. By this I certainly prefer open headphones.

There are headphones which could subjectively rival open headphones but they are largely price inhibitive.

As a simple rule of thumb the open headphones tend to be better than closed.

You can certainly still get great sounding closed headphones but these are a little dearer. You can even convert Senn HD580/600 or 650 to semi-closed by buying some wooden covers from here

A search for closed headphones over at head-fi.org will bring up plenty of information for you as the question has been asked many times.

GoRedwings19 (is that you Mike? If so welcome to avforums, you want to damage your wallet even more!).

Hi Steve,

Yes it's me. I decided to sign up for speaker suggestions. Anyway I stumbled into the headphone section.

I wonder how covering up the hd600/650 would alter the sound? Would it be like cupping your hands over each end? Or at least similar?

Mixed bag of feedback on closing the Senns. There's enough people who have heard them at head-fi meets to merit giving them a try. It's likely to be a love or hate reaction though.

Must admit I'd like to try them out but I've spent enough on headphile updates so far I'd be better off buying shares in it.
