Some musings on the Sennheiser CX300

OK, I've written this primarily for other forums, but feel like i may as well share it here as well....

The new Sennheiser CX300 ear buds are Sennheisers answer to a market that has long been dominated by the likes of Sony's MDR-EX71 and various rivals, like the JVC HA-FX55.

To me, a lot of these earbuds offered reasonable if not particularly great sound quality, often suffering from a recessed midrange and mainly being good if you use older ipods with their well known bass deficiency problems.

There are also the more upmarket phones, like the Shure E2C and Etymotic ER6i etc... and then you can get even higher end ones, however, that would be missing the point...

Previously to this, I have used Shure E2C, JVC HA-FX55 and Sony MDR-EX71.

The CX300 cost me £32 from discount discs, so that puts them just £2 above the EX71.

Trust me when I say, these are worth it. In fact, they absolutely destroy the Sony's, and JVC's. Compared to the Senn's, the Sony and JVC have undefined bass, and no midrange to speak of, and harsh treble, and generally sound unrefined.

Compared to the Shure, well I think these beat the Shure's as well, it makes those sound a bit muffled and midrange recessed as well. The only area the Shure's beat them to my ears is isolation, where because of their design, the Shures attenuate a bit better than the Sennheisers.

From what I have heard of these, you may well have to spend £100 just to match the overall sound quality of these when it comes to earbuds.

In fact, it comes fairly usefully close to my full sized Beyerdynamic DT531 headphones: OK, so they arent as good as those, but the Beyers are full size - so they should be better. The Beyers are more comfortable, and are better in every sonic area, but not MASSIVELY, just noticably. You would never pick the Sennheisers over the Beyers, but you would NEVER wear the Beyers in public, unless you didnt care about looking like a total prat, and didnt mind carrying a pocket amplifier to go with your ipod!

In short, if you are looking for a reasonable pair of portable headphones, you should put these at the top of your list, and frankly, not even bother with any alternative that may cost much less than £100, IMHO

Hi Paul & thanks for your comments. How do they compare to the Koss KSC- 75's regarding sound detail? (Saw you recommending them to someone on another post so I presumed you had a pair) I have a pair of the Koss 75's and absolutely love 'em. Fantastic sounstage and instrument seperation. They just leak a bit of sound, that's all. After all the hype, I decided to order a set of Senn CX300's from www.discountdiscs.co uk. I'm hoping for the same sort of sound but with no sound leakage which is useful in some situations. What do you think?

Please post your findings, after you run them for a few days ...

Sorry Mate...Haven't a clue what your getting at I'm just asking for a quick comparison between the two, seeing as this guy's got both pairs. It didn't need a few days running in for me to say the Koss 75's were a fantastic earphone. They hit me immediatly. I'm sure he's intelligent enough to give me a description of how they sound now and maybe later after they've been burned in a little... Chill Out.

I would not expect them to better the KSC75, but it will offer more isolation, and it wont sound much / any worse IMO. I am very impressed with them so far.

Just asking for your opinions on CX300's that's all ... not a big deal.

Big Tony...Sorry mate, I thought you were wittering and lecturing me about the phones being reviewed too early (ie. before they've had a chance to burn in ) I apologise if you meant otherwise I've ordered a pair of the CX300's in silver. I also own the Creative 630,s which look very similar. I was very disappointed with those though. I thought the sound was crap. Hoping these have different drivers and a better sound.

I just got mine today from ebay and its from the discount disc people lol!

All I can say is I wasnt too impressed by the packaging and that the plug is just standard not gold like my Sony ones...and also its full length BUT...

WOW these earphones are awesome! They fit extremely better in the ear and the bass is very punchy!! OOOOH I want to keep them on at work all day lol!!

Also the cable is very fine and feels like its gonna last a lot longer than my MDR-EX81 which everyone has had issues with concerning the cable that frays away and starts showing the wire!!

Awesome earphones thanks PAUL!

Paul

How do you find the bass on the CX300's compared to the Sony MDR-EX71?
I have had four pairs of the Sony's and everytime the right earphone has stopped working (my fourth pair have just started playing up). I tried the Shure E2C's and was totally disappointed, there was no bass!

I can tell you right now that these CX300's that Paul has recommended KILL the Sony earphones for Bass! The CX300 are AWESOME for BASS!!

I have had 3 pairs of top end Sony earphones paying £35 each time as they have been the best I have found for Bass until now...Go for the CX300's or I tell you what if they arent bassy enough compared to the Sony earphones I WILL PAY YOU £50!

Well I cant see them being disappointed, unless of course they prefer a muddy wall of sound that is the Sony bass, in comparison to the punchy as hell bass of the CX300.

I'm picking them up on Saturday (to go with the 60Gb iPod I'm getting), so £50 seems a good deal but I hope you can keep your money because I'm sick of having to replace the Sony's all the time. Just in case though, we're talking cash or a cheque with a valid card, yes?

If you're after the black version of the CX 300, I found it at electronics-online for a quid more than at discount discs (which is out of stock of the black version). It's the cheapest place I could see utilising Froogle and a few other price comparison sites.

Your £50 is safe, They are amazing. I must admit I didn't think I would be able to hear the difference between the CX300's and the Sony's but the bass is so much clearer.
Sweet (as I believe the kid's might say).

If you mean the CX300's, the left ear is 3ft 6" and the right is 4ft 8".

I've had mine for 3 weeks now and and I think they're brilliant.

In my other post I mention how unsuitable for jogging the CX300's are.
But I thought I'd add here how they are also not quite what I was expecting sonically.

Taking their effectiveness of reducing outside noise out of the equation, they are not as good as a well fitting pair of MX500's.
They are very bass heavy, and although not harsh in the treble, there is some body and openess missing.

I was left underwhelmed.

Jules, I don't what player you are using, and while the MX500's are good. the CX300's wipe the floor with them in every respect.

Not if you insert the MX500s vertically.
I think the MX500s problem is fitting, whereas the CX300 fit all ears perfectly.
If you can get a good fit with MX500, or insert them vertically, then having heard both I am personally in no doubt that the MX500s are better. They sound more like my HD600s.

CX300 have a much clearer sound to me (vs mx500), but IMO they are unsuitable for walking and jogging because of the way canal phones amplify every sound from your body, like your footsteps, and also any contact with the wire is amplified to a very noticeable level too. So when out walking, you can hear every footfall and every time the wire moves (which is every step you take) you can hear that too. It forms a significantly noisy dull accompaniment which takes some serious volume to drown out.

For me it totally ruins the quality sound they're putting out.

Even when using them in the house, you can then hear your breathing and even your hearbeat over quiet sections of music. Very off-putting.

I suppose they're good for a noisy bus journey, but that's about it IMO. For me anyway.

I'm going back to my MX500s.

Well guys, I have the MX500 for use with an iPOD Shuffle an I only like them with the included foams.

With them Without them

What do you think of the CX300 for highway and open road motorcycle riding not everyday commuting because of noise cancelling...
