Headphone Bling - 'Pimp my Cans'

This is what happens when you get into headphones too far.

You send your expensive set off to the states to have a makeover:

Hopefully they are well on the way home now. Picture is courtesy of the person who does the mods.

These are my Grado HF1s a limited edition run of around 500 that were available to head-fi members. The sound is said to give the Grado RS1s a good run for the money plus you get a decent cable and a more unique set of headphones.

Don't expect these to appear in the for sale section - ever!

Steve

Are there any mods on them other than to the cable then?

Yes the plastic headband is replaced with a leather one and the plastic cups on the headphones replaced with deeper wooden ones.

You would not believe they were the same headphones if you saw the original style.

Apart from cable mods (and in that instance the only aftermarket mod I've ever been genuinely happy with is the Cardas), never been tempted to pimp out any of my headphones. But then I guess most of them need no pimping

I'd say that the Headphiled HD600 that I tried a while back was a bit of a travesty in terms of mucking around with the sonic design intent of the Senns, but I guess it's all about what the individual wants, and what he's happy with. I would also imagine that Headphile/Larry's mods have a much more positive effect in the case of the Grado phones, which are woefully underengineered to begin with. C-pads look like a VERY sensible idea.

They've arrived home!!

The modded HF1s arrived today and are as good as they look, I'm burning them in a little as a standard precaution but I get to listen to them too.

The quality of the work Larry does is real good and now they look, feel and sound like a special set of Grado cans.

I do have a set of the headphile pads on my MS2is but once you get used to the Grado bowls I prefer the sound without the pads.

Steve

have to say as a widow to a sewing machine, the stitching/pattern cutting looks pretty rough on the headband...

minor detail aside they look very special

I think it's just that picture which makes it look worse than in real life.
