I'm no audiophile, so what do you suggest?

Hi,

Just about to get my first MP3 player and want some in-ear headphones to go with it. I never use the factory pair, generally faily rubbish.

However, I'm no music guru, so only want to spend a max of £25.

May use them at the gym, but unlikely, will definitely use them for walking to and from the train station every day.

Just want a pair that have decent sound quality, and a volume on the cord would be a bonus - so I don't have to keep fiddling in my pocket to listen to station annoncements.

Any ideas?

Many thanks.

Not really in ear phones tho...

For that really the JVC HA-FX55's or the Sony MDR-EX71's should be on your wishlist.

I'm going to cheat and paste from another post (saves me typing and saves you searching).

Popular ones are sony's fontopia series, Panasonic HJE ones (HJE-50 if I'm not mistaken), JVC makes one too (HA FX something or rather, though some say it uses the same components as Panasonic due to their internal relationship) and often-overlooked Philips SHE 9500 or 9501. Personally I don't know JVC one.

May I also suggest a headphone solution. Not ideal for working out, but tend to provide good quality vs cost. Consider Sennheiser HD 201 and AKG K26P. HD201 is particularly well known for good cost/quality ratio. They have low impedance too for portable players and are great step up from stock earbuds.

Hows about the Sennheiser MX 550?

Sennheiser seems to get mixed reviews when searching the net.

Just going to ask the obvious question, did you do a search? Plenty on this topic in the forum

A challenge to beat these headphones

I have already laid down a challenge to see if anyone can name an in ear (non isolated) that can beat the sony edr 21 or 31)at £17.49 from Amazon so far I have had no responses

They beat the MX from senn series quite easily imho

It's a little frustrating because it seems that a pair of headphones can be great for one person and rubbish for the next.

I guess there's no substitute for actually listening to them, but if there is a general consensus that a pair is good enough theni would go for them off the back of that. However, there are so many contrasting opinions out there!

I guess, not being an expert, I could probably go with any one of the suggestions made and I would be happy.

Your after some 'in-ear', at around £25 or less for me you cannot beat the Sony 31's or 21's (and they are £17.49). Note these are difficult to try as they go in ear and so not hygienic. One complaint I have heard some people have is that because it has an egg shape it some times rubs on the ear but no one I know has complained of the sound quality compared to ones in it's price range. If they don't rub on your ears. Note what hifi gave it 5 stars (not that everything they review is good) but they heard a few rivals. Whatever you buy let us know what you think so we all can learn
