5.1 Headphone Advice

Hello

I am looking for a way of getting surround sound without lots of speakers / wires. I have been thinking about 5.1 headphones, eg the Medusa ones I have seen mentioned in this forum. It would only be for occasional use, and I am not looking for wonderful sound quality.

I currently have a Toshiba RDXS32 DVD Recorder. If I go down the route of buying these headphones, will I be able to plug them into the DVD player? Or will I need to buy something else (eg. processor / amp.)?

Thanks for you help.

Bill

You'll need an AV receiver/processor with 5.1 analog outputs. I could think of a number of 2-channel headphones which would be superior for music for about that amount or a bit more, but for surround gaming and movies, the Medusa could be a better experience.

The let-down point of the Medusa is really the amp which is definitely built down to a price. I mean, for ~£45 you can't expect too much out of a package which includes a headphone and a 5.1 channel amp. They're definitely more of a game phone, but it will work for movies. The vibration does actually help, to a surprising extent, with the lows.

Thanks very much for the reply. Can anyone recommend an inexpensive AV receiver/processor with 5.1 analog outputs? Again, it would only be in the context of using the Medusa headphones.

I'd say hunt for used. Buying new specifically for the Medusa seems like a waste of money to me, especially given the previously mentioned substandard Medusa amp (which you'll have to connect to the processor's 5.1 outs).

You're talking comfortably into 3 figures for an even half-way decent 5.1 decoder, even 2nd hand. If you're going to spend that kind of money, don't faff about with a Medusa headset, get a Philips SBCHD1500 setup instead. Orders of magnitude better.

You know, I swear I posted an edit to my message but NicolasB brings up a good point. And anyway, why not just a regular 2-channel headphone? Is 5.1 THAT important?
