Question Beyerdynamic DT 250 - 80 or 250 Ohm?

Sound Card: ASUS Xonar Essence STX. What version of DT 250 will be better?

I want to upgrade my old Sennheiser HD 280 to better closed headphones (cost <330$). I like 280 for their detail and vibrance sound, but sometimes not enough bass, volume(lengthy) and a panoramic.
Music: Metal, Industrial, Alternative, Rock and Instrumental (For example: Rammstein, Megaherz, Oomph, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Nightwish, Nirvana).
I have read many reviews and my choice fell on Beyerdinamic 250. Is it good choice for my musical preferences?

Sorry for my "Great" Engilsh.

Re: Beyerdynamic DT 250 - 80 or 250 Ohm?

Go with the 80ohm.

The 250ohm doesn't sound any better, but absolutely needs a dedicated amp, and the STX doesn't have the power. I have the DT250/80. It's ok without amping, but opens up with a little power. The STX should be fine with the 80ohm, as I ran mine off a USB DAC/amp for a while until I got a desktop amp, and they were great.

AS far as your music, the DTs are fairly neutral, so don't impose a certain sound of their own, and have very good detail, so can do everything well. If the music is bassy, you get bass. If it doesn't, you don't.

Very underrated phone that is very capable and versatile.

Hello, I'm new to the forums, I have been hunting for some beyerdynamic DT 250 advice for quite some time, so I stumbled upon this thread and I would really appreaciate it.
Hi Drubbing, I am split 50/50, buy Sennheiser HD 25-1 II or the Beyerdynamic DT250.
How good are the Beyerdynamics at noise isolation? This is what I'd really like to know. I'm looking to get a pair that is good at isolating noise. (the sennheisers are better at this but aren't very good in sound quality compared to the dt250, so I've read.
But since you've got a pair, how good are they?

SQ? They're good, I passed up on some far sexier and more exotic phones for them, because of their quality and versatility. Yes, I'm biased, as I've heard a range of Senns and don't like the sound, so that's my disclosure, take it as you see fit.

I don't have the dB specs, but it's safe to say the Senn will have higher isolation - it's a DJ based phone. That also means bass emphasis, which reduces clarity of the other freq's, and overall SQ.

If isolation is your priority, it will provide noticeably more than the DT250. It depends how much you think you need.I listen to mine at home, so massive isolation is not a priority, but they provide significantly more than my open phones, but not as much as canals.

Bias aside, the DT250 is far more neutral and therefore will suit a wider range of music; if the music has bass, you'll get it, it not, you won't. It imposes far less of its own sound 'style' on music. It's a music production phone that is great for listening too, which not all are.

I've been leaning towards one then the other for about a month now.
I know the seens have much higher isolation.
To be honest I don't think I need that much but somewhere in between.
My two listening-stations will be at home and at university. So there won't be any in-train, in-bus, in the middle of the high-street listening.

I listen to mostly everything and not just bass-guaranteed tracks.
I don't care much about brand names. From the few reviews read for both types, the DT 250-250 have better sound quality, but also that not many people can spot the difference between the 250 ohms and the 80 ohms version.
My main concern is to be able to shut out TV sound (without turning the headphone volume to deafening levels) that is quite close to me in my living room, where I also do my studies.
You think the DT250-80 will be able to do that?

Completely false. This is just reviewers (amateur and pro) assuming that a higher ohm phones will sound better and need to confirm their own bias; It's ohm-snobbery. It might be the case with some of the higher level Beyers, where they have 32, 250 and 600ohm versions of the same phone, but not the DT250.

I've heard both, they sound exactly the same, except the 250-250 needs a powerful amp to sound as good as the 80 does without one. The 250 is designed for studios where phones are shared across high loads, that's all the extra resistance is for.

Yes. So long as the TV isn't deafeningly loud.

I didn’t express myself clearly, forgive me. What I meant to say is that the Beyerdynamics DT 250 has better sound quality than the Sennheiser HD 25-1 ii, but in addition to that, you were right I also said that the 250ohms version was better than the 80ohms version according to this review, that can be downloaded in pdf.
I have renewed hope to get the DT250 now that you told me that they are capable of decent isolation. But I am sceptical in one respect, as to the relatively long time these headphones have been around, and that I may get a copy of a pair produced 9* years ago and that it will break down after one week of use.
*Just an estimate guess.
Do you think they continue producing these headphones, according to demand, or they stopped making them long time ago?

A head fi review? Say no more. I do call in there, but the guff and misinformation on there is rife. Post count is king there, you can say anything with 4,00 posts on your sig, and hoards will believe...

I don't understand, why would you end up with a copy? They've been around a long time, and they're still making them because they are a good product and continue to sell well. They are also less sexy looking that a lot of phones, and not a flavour of the month either, so don't lend themselves to being copied.

If you don't want to risk buying fake anything, buy from a reputable source.

Thank you Drubbing, I believe in what you say, and I have made my decicion about 99 percent for the beyers. Do you know if DV247 is a reputable place to buy these headphones from?

P.S. I read a review from dan's data, - he preferred the 80ohms instead of the 250, whilst not finding any evident changes in sound quality between the two. When I read the Head-Fi, review, I also read it with a bit of reservation.

Sorry mate, I have no idea on that vendor, they look legit enough though. THe price is comparable with Amazon, so it may be better to get from there anyway.

I've read some of Dan's reviews and they always seems pretty balanced.

Thank you Drubbing, I was going to place the order today but seeing as package couriers aren't working tomorrow, it will probably be a while until I get my order, so I've decided to wait until things start rolling again.
