Thanks: Gave 0, Got 0 | best closed headphones up to £150
Hi, I would like to buy a good quality set of closed headphones. I want to use them at home with my Hi-Fi also in the tube and during my flights with my ipod so good noise isolation is important. My budget is up to 150 pounds. I have in my mind the following:
AKG K271,
Audio-Technica ATH-A700,
Beyerdynamic DT770,
Koss Pro/4AAT Titanium,
Sony MDR-XB700
Any other suggestions welcome |

I think the AKG is discontinued. Even so, it was a studio designed phone, and by reports sounded pretty crap.
All the others are pretty big, and won't travel all that well. Canal phones really would be your best bet if mostly on the move.
In addition, the Koss will need a decent desktop amp, as will the 770.
As for the Sony, anything that markets itself based on bass-a-plenty isn't going to be any good at much else.
On SQ alone, I can highly recommend the Beyer DT250 (80ohm version). But also very comfortable for long sessions, and everything is replaceable, with a detachable cable at the driver (more makers should do this) so any accidents won't see them getting binned.
Will isolate around the same as some of those you listed, which isn't huge for the tube though. Will sound very good on your hi fi and only need a little amping to get the best from them, but can go pretty well off an iPod.

I haven't heard them, but as a DJ phone, bass is likely to be overdone, isolation will be good. I do know this one isn't considered comfortable.
As I have them myself, I still recommend looking into the DT250.

I think they are a little above your price range, I had some ATH-A900's and they were very good, even without being burned in. They were however faulty, so I returned them, and didnt replace them, i found my ears got quite hot after a while with them, and i felt uncomfortable.
maybe something else to bear in mind with large closed headphones if you spend a long time on a plane.

I considered getting a pair of Ultrasone HFI 780s for gaming and watching movies with my astro mixamp. Ultrasone HFI-780 Headphones | SALE Now On!
They are £129 and from what I read about them they produced excellent sound quality and sound detection i.e. the ability to detect the direction of sound easily.
In the end I went for some open Audio Technica AD700s because apparently open headphones are better suited for gaming, but if its closed headphones your looking for maybe you should check out the ultrasone?

I have A700's they are brilliant.
I like AT headphones, they tend to have a nice balanced sound.
