Dolby surround headphones needed

Must be compatible with XBOX 360, preferably wireless, preferrably with an optical input ( from 360) or jack from non dolby headphone reciever. Desperate to find something before COD MW 2 comes out......All advice and experience welcome...

If it's for gaming one of the best things to get is the Astro A40 mixamp and headset...

However, I'd get the Mixamp (used as much for comms as it is for ampification)

and a wired headset.

If you have to go wireless, there are not many great ones about - but the Turtle Beach x41 are wireless...

Personally, I'd go

A40 Mixamp - £99
Audio Technica Headset - £99
Mic (Zalman pencil mic) or a boom mic

Voila, you have a top notch system that gives what you need from a gaming session i.e. to be able to hear people behind you...

Have you got a link to where you're getting then from please? Do these control voice comms?

JUst go into ebay and type the item into the searchbar. I don't think you can do coms through it but you should be able to configure your xbox to play your mic through the main out channel. I am hoping the sound quality of this will be far superior to any gaming headset.

Hopefully you won't get stung for import tax, look forward to hear what you think of it though.

That's the reason I'm going for the mixamp with some Audio Technica headphones. Main reason for the mixamp over the jvc is the comms control .

I am hoping the sound quality will be far superior on the JVCs. Not too bothered about coms as I usually play ffa.

Have you managed to test your amp and headphones yet? What do you think? Are you impressed

I just upgraded to some Audio Technica AD700s to use alongside my mixamp. I've ordered a labtech boom mic to with this setup also.

Although we're using different cans and amps, I think this approach is the way forward If you want quality sound from your gaming. Gaming headsets have little speakers in the ear and although this sounds good in theory the actual result isn't great and nowhere near as good as using an amp outputting dolby digital into a decent pair of open earphones. As for wireless gaming headsets, I honestly dont see the point. Yes you've got a little freedom, but how much do you need when playing a game or watching a movie? The fact that they suffer from interference and hiss is enough to put me off.

Anyone reading this thread should consider the astro mix amp, the JVC amp or something similar and pair it up with a good set of open earphones.

If you want an all in one solution i.e matching earphones with a boom mic attachment then I'd recommend the Astro A40s.

£199.95 from Astrogaming | Astro Gaming

The sound produced is excellent for games and movies, the headphones are really comfy, a mic is included and everything looks good.

Imo its much better to invest in something like this than waste your money on something like the Turtle Beach x41 which costs £150, is reported to suffer from no end of problems and wont give you anywhere near the result of something like the A40s.

Re: Dolby surround headphones needed

They have just been posted from Japan, I will post my thoughts on them here. I will be using an old pair of Sennis that were mafe in Germany before they shipped production out to China. Rock solid open cans with a superb sound. A far cheaper option than the mix amp or the ASTROS and I'm guessing at a superior sound quality.

Re: Dolby surround headphones needed

Mr BISHI, time to get some info from you please.
What is the JVC like?
I just had my money refunded from AC as they had no stock but failed to mention this to me...
Been waiting 8 days for nothing...
Waiting for funds to clear, and I will save 30 AUD from an Ebay seller in Japan who has stock...

Look forward to your views...

Re: Dolby surround headphones needed

Used HD 25 Mk II and HD 600s through a valve/ss hybrid amp.
No matter what setting I had it on, it sounded like it was echoing..
I could not clearly convey any real 5.1 imaging, which is what the unit is supposed to emulate..
The Trittons can do this with no echo..
A bit ****** off, as I was looking forward to using the HD 600s for DH..
If the JVC is the same as the Mixamp, which I believe it is, you guys a getting torn a new 1..
Oh well,live and learn..

I had the same impression at first; it doesn't seem to be any good for game types such as HQ (COD4) but I find the device accurate enough for S&D and HCS&D [I'm on about the SU-DH1]

Mine arrive today. They had better be up to the job as I payed an extra £27 tax and fees for them. What setting do you have tem on 5.1 or dolby headphone. Are you inputting optical 5.1 from source also.

Re: Dolby surround headphones needed

I ran them 3 ways, from the Xbox 360 for gaming, Optical, ran them as DD 5.1 in, DH1 worked OK, DH2 was more echoey, 3 was unusable.
Same with PS3.
Then I ran out of HTPC, Optical out, same thing, it picks up DTS straight away, very disappointed..

Maybe I am just retarded, by I am thinking I am not that stupid, it sounds crap..
The Trittons sound way better, and you can localise sounds..
JVC does nadda..

Get back to me, you might think differently..

JVC SU-DH1 Review and User Opinions - Setup and Performance - JVC - MP3 Players Reviews by Digital Trends 2009 11/03

According to this review on page 3 you need to use the cinema pro logic setting to bet surround sound and not the dolby headphone settings. Try out what this chap says...

Re: Dolby surround headphones needed

Hmm okay will do, will play around with it tomorrow, before it becomes a book end, and I don't own any books LOL..
thx for the link..

Just played with it then, erm you can not have PL II on when 5.1 DD is an input.
I tried, tried again, nothing..
DD 5.1 over rides everything, and only DH 1, 2 or 3 is available, such as DTS, PL II is for stereo sources only as I know..

All I can say mate is that I'm really sorry to hear that your disappointed and have potentially wasted your money, like I said earlier I am suprised by your findings because alot of people rate the JVC device.

I use the mixamp with my ad700s and can honestly say that the sound quality is superb in both games and films. There is bass when needed and everything sounds crystal clear and really sharp. The dolby headphone works great and I can accuratley hear where sounds are coming from with no problems.

I've heard different things about the JVC like that it uses an older chip and its two additional modes aren't very good to game with, but I don't know how much oof this is true and how much of it is opinion?

Hopefully after some tweaking with settings you'll be more happy.

Well dolby surround 2 is certainly a step up from stereo. We'll see how DD5.1 works out after I spend £4 on a bloody adaptor tomorrow !!!

Re: Dolby surround headphones needed

I've got an SU-DH1.

pros

DH1 is best for movies,
DH2 is best for games especially FPS's
Decodes DTS which nearly all HDrips have nowadays
Cheaper than the MixAmp

cons

No easy way to integrate voice chat into the mix
Not convinced that DH works that well when watching films with it.

Don't worry Bishi, the difference will be night and day once you are able to feed it via optical and from a 5.1 source.

I think I have tweaked enough, I am not fussed with the $, as I knew this product, I was under the assumption that the Mixamp and JVC used the same chips, and that the JVC was newer, but this doesn't make sense as the JVC one has been out since 2006?

I will give it another go, but atm I have no FPS I am playing, I will try Dead space as that is truly a chilling game in its DD 5.1 mode on my Trittons..

I might even get the mixamp, but I highly doubt it..

This is my next toy in the works...

ButtKicker®

This with any headphones will be truly awesome..

The MixAmp has the newer DH chip. A bit surprised you don't like the way Dolby Headphone sounds. Sure you have 360 set to output in 5.1 surround in the audio options?

You can always sell the SU-DH1 on eBay.

Man the ButtKicker is supposed to be awesome but not that many people seem to have them.

They seem to be very popular with people who play sim racers like Forza and have a steering wheel/chair setup and those that are into flight sims.

Last time I had a look on the UK supplier site they were out of stock and awaiting the release of new improved model.
