Its relative. You don't really know what to hear for until you have heard it. If you cannot hear a difference no matter what then all the better and you will save a lot of money. Ignorance is bliss as they say. On the other hand if you go down the upgrade path and listen to better headphones then you may well find that you are unable to return to your previous pair
I owned countless pairs of cheap canalphones until I upgraded to IEMs and each one was better than the previous; UE super fi.5 Pro -> Shure E4G -> Westone UM2. I never was truly satisfied and that is why I went down the IEM route but as I said you do not realise what you are missing until it has been shown to you. Likewise my current headphones of choice are the AT ESW9 and Senn HD600. Ironically because of the ESW9 I am now not satisfied with my UM2 and will seek out new IEMs
Its entirely possible for your ears to function slightly differently and I would not quickly discount one ear being "clearer" as that might well be a sign of life's toll
