Ultimate Ears SuperFi.5 Pro v Dr Dre Monster Beats

Hi everyone,

Due to an incurable case of upgradeitis and itchy credit card, I am tempted to trade in my excellent Ultimate Ears SuperFi.5 Pro's for a decent set of cans as opposed to IEM's.

A) Am I buying style (subject to personal opinion) over substance i.e. Are the Dr Dre's just an apparently successful marketing exercise?

or

B) Should I keep the UE's and save up for a decent set of NC Cans? Please recommend away as I#m open to suggestions..........

Cheers guys/gals

Your time is appreciated

Rgds

Chris

You aren't saying why you have restless fingers and playing with your CC in your hands...

Is there an aspect of the sound of the UE which you wish to improve upon? FYI I went from the same UEs -> Shure E4G -> Westone UM2, but can inform you the game has moved on in the IEM world with the top of the line universal offerings from Westone, Shure, UE and Sennheiser

Or do you just want to try something new?

Are you able to go for closed full-sized headphones?
Audio on train/tube without looking a tw@t?

Good question...to summarise I am generally 90% happy with the UE's especially now I have used the Comply foams (which IMHO make a difference on comfort as well as sealing out excess noise).....so I guess I will keep them for travelling etc...

The SuperFi 5 Pro's are a fairly new purchase so am intrigued as to what the advantages of the new developments are? Can you shed some light on this perhaps....

I just seem drawn to the Dr Dre's but am certainly no fashion victim/Premiership footballer as seems to be the target market....wadda u think?

Will the Dre's improve the bass, and tighten overall audio transfer from a high bit-rate MP3 or FLAC source?

Just had a chuckle at your title "Audio on train/tube without looking a tw@t? " and found it very amusing....the cans will be strictly used in my home unless I want a kicking from the locals....

Re: Ultimate Ears SuperFi.5 Pro v Dr Dre Monster Beats

If you are at home then a nice pair of home headphone, that is full sized open backed headphones would be a nice compliment to your IEM. You have to consider manufacturers are constrained by physical size and can only do so much. There is no comparison when listening to my Senn HD600. And generally at home you are using home sources, whilst on the road you have to put into context you are plugging said IEMs into a portable

Unless its the significant other not wanting you to disturb with headphones which leak sound, then as I try to explain in my link (its not my thread ), there are imo better alternatives than active noise cancelling

That UE series has always been bass-biased, quite apart from being Frankenstein plugs. At least you did not buy the 'EB version

Can't really say more without knowing your home/portable sources and your preference in music

But for nearly £300 you can buy an astonishing headphone...

I think 'A' and yes to 'B', but I've no love for the whole Dre concept. The link to this other post contains a link to a review, which says pretty much what you suspect about the Dre's. That is, they're not dogs, but they're not in the league M Beats (very loudly) proclaim they are, and for the money, there's better to be had.

I know I've never heard these things, but some products just reek of marketing first, product second.

An Alternative to Beyerdynamic DT 770 M in terms of noise isolation

The main home source is an Arcam Solo Movie, and the portable is a 16Gb Ipod Touch...
