Hi

I recently got a laptop with a bluray player in and was gonna use it to watch stuff on my plasma, unfortunately I dont have an amp with HDMI and the laptop only has HDMI as an output with the digital sound in so I need some way to split the digital audio out of the HDMI to route it to my amp.

Currently the onlyl thing I can find that might do the job is

Which is a bit much and Im hoping there might be some other cheaper alternative around?

If I had to spend that much I'd be tempted to pay the extra and get a PS3!

I don't believe the switch on the attached link will do this anyway. I believe the switch will switch the corresponding optical input but wont provide an audio signal on the optical out if no optical input is provided.

Back to square 1 I guess.

How about adding a quality USB sound card to supply your amp (either via optical or possibly as multichannel analogue which might even provide the HD format sounds)

Ah hadn't thought about that on the switch, but thanks the USB sound card thing I'd not even thought about, now just need to find a USB sound device that has optical out :-)

Not a recommendation or anything I know much about but does provide optical.

Also provides analogue outs so might even be able to use your PC to decode the HD formats and output to the 5.1 inputs (if available) on your amp. It might be worth posting in the PC forums for someone with more experience to answer that question though.

Even if it does it wont provide anything better than a stereo (i.e. 2 channel) signal. I suppose as a stop gap you could then use your amp to apply DPL to give a psuedo surround signal but do be aware that some TVs wont output anything on the optical unless viewing the integrated freeview tuner
