Yes HDMI can send video and sound. However from a PC it's a different matter. Usually in a PC you have seperate chips for video and sound. A video card for video and a sound card for audio. It's how it's always being done.
For years people have always connected the two seperate as well.
To get video and sound from a PC via HDMI someone needs to integrate a sound chip with a video card which is still rare.
Of course really the PC manufacturers should still be using DVI for video output but DVI to HDMI cables are not so common so maybe a HDMI socket was chosen as the cable would be easier to find.
To the original poster you may have a digital output or headphone output on your laptop. That can then be fed to an amp or the TV. Not ideal but using a laptop or a PC for viewing is still comparatively not that common outside of Powerpoint etc.
If it can be done If you right click the speaker symbol on the task bar it should let you select speakers or digital output if available.
With the player it depends on the software you use but if the sound output is set to digital then it generally follows that or 'right click and then select playback devices'. Either way try setting the sound output to digital if it can be done. May also be in control panel/sounds.
