Ive got a sony kdls3000 which i now need to buy an hdmi cable for.

Will any old cheapo hdmi cable do or do i have to get one thats rated for v1.3 compatability to get the most out of it?

Do a search!!!!! Check the FAQ at hdmi.org and bluejeanscables.com for further information but at present, there is no such thing as a v1.3 cable, they're rated cat 1 and cat 2 according to the speed rating. Basically if the cable length is short, pretty much any cable will do. I use 2 freebie HDMI leads with no problems and have seen £5 jobs from Lidl and they're fine too. For the rest in my system, I use markgrant and a bettercables for my long projector run cable. None of them cost the earth.

A cheap HDMI cable is enough, BUT get one that is at least got good mechanical connections so around £10 would be OK.

I have used a couple of £2.50 E-Buyer specials which are now in the dustbin.

Ok i bought the cheapest hdmi cable from comet (actually was sold for the ps3) the picture is perfect but the sound quality is awful, crackling hissing etc. Could this be the cable?

I doubt it but the only way to check is by trying another cable. To fault find try other sources to the same connection on the TV to see if the problem is still there. How much was Comet's cheapest cable? Any cable marketed as being specific to the PS3 is a con as any HDMI cable is compatible. It's simply marketing spin designed to get a few more sheckles out of the unsuspecting gamer.

Yeah thats what i thought! I was worried that there was a special ps3 hdmi cable that meant i had hisssy/garbled sound when not using it with a ps3.

The cheapest hdmi cable in the normal 'tv' section of the store was £45, picked up the £15 one, went over to ask a salesperson the difference and he gave me some nonsense about how if i wanted really good hd quality to plump for the 45 quid one, what a ripoff.
