There is nothing special required, you just need an HDMI cable of a suitable length.

Something from www.ukhdmi.com will be fine as will cables from many other sources.

Agreed.
Just don't pay too much.
At short distances, even cheapy rubbish will work perfectly fine.

Build quality counts a bit though.

Perfectly good

And if, on the off chance, they don't work, it's no problem taking it back.

If you are using HDMI then make sure the graphics card is sending something like 1080p or 1080i as it is probably using a PC resolution which is causing your problems.

How have you connected the sound from the PC to the amp?

What are you using to test the sound?

Games for example may indeed only output 2 channel sound to the amp but if set correctly a DVD played on the PC could send a 5.1 bitstream out to the amp to be decoded

I managed to get the screen problem fixed by going into my graphics card settings and selecting an option where you can adjust the display so that it can fit in your screen. I still need to play around with the other screen settings to get a nicer picture.

As for the sound, still problems
I am connecting by optical and coax, but both ways it is only the 2 front speakers working. I have tried dvds. The surround sound is working fine when played on my xbox 360.
The drivers seem to be up to date.

This is the computer I have:

Re: HDMI pc to 50" samsung plasma, Cable needed

Your computer is just a collection of standard parts and from the looks of things you don't have a separate sound card so I assume you are using the motherboard chipset.

What software are you using to play the DVDs?

It will need to be something that supports DD/DTS and you'll need to make sure it is enabled as it is usually an option to output the encoded stream.

You haven't mentioned what your 'surround system' is but I assume it does have a DD/DTS decoder?

I am using windows media player 11.
This is my surround system:

http://www.sony.co.uk/view/ShowProdu...TechnicalSpecs

I have gone to control panel>sounds and audio devices> audio tab>advanced sound playback, and selected 5.1 surround sound speakers.

I also have realtek hd audio manager and have selected 6ch speaker and have clicked the play button to play sounds comming out of the speakers but its only the front two which play.

I havent seen anywhere I can see DD or DTS to select it or enable it.

Re: HDMI pc to 50" samsung plasma, Cable needed

Try a different player like VLC - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ see if that solves your problem.

Are you using Vista btw?

Re: HDMI pc to 50" samsung plasma, Cable needed

It is only a free player but it is known to work hence the suggestion.

You may want to move this over to the PC forum for more advice or you may want to try something like the trial version of PowerDVD as a comparison.
